Editorial Alrevés, 2012. Edición Kindle. 412 KB. e-ISBN: 978-84-15098-54-6.

The flowers of Baudelaire, by Gonzalo Garrido

The flowers of Baudelaire revolves around the brutal murder of a three-year-old girl. The victim, Anabel Krüger, is the youngest child of a wealthy family from Bilbao. The action takes place during the crisis of 1917. ‘The Spanish neutrality had fostered exports of all kinds of goods, from raw materials (agriculture and mining) to certain articles of the nascent industrialisation, concentrated in the Catalan textile and Basque steel industry’. (Taken from Wikipedia (in Spanish): Crisis española de 1917). The story is told in the first person from the main character’s point of view. The protagonist, Alfredo Maldonado is a professional photographer who runs his own store where he combines his craft with the selling of cameras and other optical accessories. He also works as a photojournalist for El Noticiero and, occasionally, cooperates with the police as an assistant photographer. This allowed him to put together a collection of crimes photographs for his private satisfaction of dubious taste. One day, while covering an event for his newspaper, he hears the news of Anabel’s murder, picks up his stuff and, as quickly as possible, shows up at the Krugers’ house. He had been taking photographs of the girl in his study a few months ago, on her birthday. Once he has finished his job and severely affected by this heinous and senseless crime, he decides to investigate on his own.

I was interested in this novel for several reasons. It is a debut novel, distributed by an independent publisher. It combines historical fiction, and crime fiction. The action is set in 1917 during the First World War, a very interesting time in my view, the end of an era. It takes place in Bilbao. The main character is an amateur sleuth, a photographer by profession, and I had read some highly favourable reviews. Despite some small flaws, that can be easily forgiven in a debut novel – mainly there are far too many secondary plots that do not add much to the main story, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story is told through the opinions and feelings of the principal character and is nicely written. The recreation of the atmosphere of that time is well documented. Most characters are fully credible and appealing. Maybe the outcome is slightly forced although there’s a surprising twist at the end. Personally I’d like to see Alfredo Maldonado back into action, although it’s not the author’s intention at least in the short term, as far as I know. A solid reading well above average.

My rating: 3/5.

The Flowers of Baudelaire is shortlisted for the Memorial Silverio Cañada Prize that will be awarded during the “Semana Negra de Gijón” to the best first novel of the year.

Maybe I should start by saying that I received this book from Rob Kitchin. Rob, besides his profession in academia, is a writer, a blogger and a great crime fiction aficionado. His blog The View from the Blue House is an excellent source of new and interesting crime fiction books. You can find my reviews of two of his previous books HERE and HERE.

Tadhg Maguire arrives home one night, slightly more drunk than he thought. When he gets into his bed, Kate, his girlfriend, remains wrapped in the duvet without uttering a single word, at least that’s what he thinks. They’ve been together for seven months, lately, only bicker. Before dawn, Tadhg wakes up suddenly and finds Kate screaming at the foot of his bed. There is another man in the bed. A naked man. With a hairy back. All covered in blood. A dead man. When he finally reacts. Kate is gone. The dead man turns out to be Toni Marino, Aldo Pirelli’s right hand man. Pirelli is the local boss of organized crime in this small New England town of barely 35,000 inhabitants. Tadhg works for the local newspaper, The Spring Times. He has been covering all kinds of social events for the last five years.

The right thing to do would be to wait until the police arrive. The sensible thing would be to go away and disappear forever. The only remaining option is to dispose of the body pretending it has never been there. No body, no crime. Problem solved. Life goes on.

To help him getting rid of the body, Tadhg calls his best friend since he arrived to America from a small Irish town when he was fourteen, Jason Choi. Jason is a second-generation Korean who weighs 350 pounds. But Tadhg’s problems won’t end up there. A second body appears, and Annabelle Levy, another former school mate, also shows up. She’s is mixed race – white Jewish father, black mother. She’s intelligent, beautiful and pissed off with the whole world. To get rid of the two bodies they need a van. Here is where Paavo Poukkanes, another old school pal, comes into play. And then an unknown man shows up and demands a million dollars that belong to him. or so he claims. For some reason, he thinks that Jadhg has the money. Following a series of crazy races Tadhg will become the most wanted man in America. He may end up in prison without even knowing what’s up. But first he is determined to rescue his friends who have been kidnapped.

Thanks to this book I have come to discover a new subgenre, at least to me, ‘screwball noir’. A combination of two film genres, the screwball comedy and the film noir, that can be applied to any other artistic expression. The name was first coined in the nineties. In Spain a pioneer in this genre is Pedro Almodovar with his film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, 1988.

Stiffed is a farce, a crazy comedy and a black tale written in a humorous tone. As such, some essential features are: an amateur detective, a ‘femme fatale’ and a dizzying action full of ridiculous but funny situations. It’s also an easy and enjoyable read. For some it may be irrelevant, I disagree. Above all, it’s nicely written. The plot is interesting and well structured, and the characters are very attractive. Tadhg and his friends will be hard to forget. And, who knows, maybe we can see them again one day. A highly recommended reading..

My rating: 4/5.

Bernard Minier grew up at the foot of the Pyrenees. He has received several awards for his short stories. The Frozen Dead, originally titled Glacé (2011), is his first crime novel.

The blurb reads: The first victim is a horse: its headless body hangs suspended from the edge of a frozen cliff. On the same day as the gruesome discovery, a young psychiatrist starts her first job at a secure asylum for the criminally insane, just a few miles away. Commandant Servaz, a Toulouse city cop, can’t believe he has been called out over the death of an animal. But there is something disturbing about this crime that he cannot ignore. Then DNA from one of the most notorious inmates of the asylum is found on the corpse… and a few days later the first murder takes place. In this snowbound valley, deep in the Pyrenees, a dark story of madness and revenge is unfolding. It will take all of Servaz’s skill to solve it.

You can read my previous post Glacé – Frozen.

His second novel El círculo, originally titled Le Cercle (2012), has just been released in Spain. (Roca editorial).

Just wonder if we won’t speak soon of a Pyrenees Noir. After all Adamsberg was born there.

March Violets (Penguin Books, 2004) First published by Viking in 1989. Published together with The Pale Criminal, 1990 and A German Requiem, 1991 as Berlin Noir (Penguin Books, 1993). 256 pages. ISBN: 978-0-14-200414-2.

March Violets is the first book written by Philip Kerr featuring detective Bernhard ‘Bernie’ Gunther. The action is set in Berlin, 1936 when the city is preparing to host the Summer Olympics. Following the large increase in votes of the NSDAP at the Federal Elections held on 5 March 1933, many joined the Nazi Party. Those newcomers were considered opportunistic, and were called March Violets, the title refers to them.

Bernie Gunther, after leaving the Kriminalpolizei, Kripo for short, to become the house detective at the Adlon Hotel, has turned into a private investigator.

‘This days I do (almost) anything (except divorce) from insurance investigations to guarding wedding presents to finding missing persons – that’s the ones the police don’t already know about, as well as the one they do. Yes, that’s one are of my business that’s seen a real improvement since the National Socialists took power.’

One day, Gunther is hired by Doktor Hermann Six, a major Ruhr industrialists, to investigate the murder of his daughter Grete. Grete and her husband Paul Pfarr had died a few days ago on a fire set at their house in Lichterfelde-Ost. They were both murdered, and their safe was ransacked before the fire destroyed their home. Herr Six doesn’t know the exact contents of the safe, except for a highly valuable diamond necklace, of whose existence the Kripo has not been informed. This should provide an advantage to Gunther to track down the murderer, ahead of the criminal police. The necklace must be returned to Herr Six, before handing the murderer to the authorities. Under no circumstance should fall the necklace into the hands of the criminal police.

The novel is told in the first person by Bernie Gunther and follows the model of the American hardboiled. But Kerr’s narrative skill and the location of the events within a specific historical context, make it a memorable reading. It is a fine recreation of the atmosphere of Berlin during the rise of the Nazis to power and is well documented. It underlines the relationship between the Nazis and the underworld, the similarity of their methods, the necessary cooperation of the main industrial groups and internal power struggles among different Nazi leaders. Besides, Bernie Gunther is a remarkable character, the story is nicely plotted, and the result is a solid read with good doses of humour. I wonder why it took me so long to start reading this series and I look forward to reading The Pale Criminal, the next one in the series.

My rating: 4/5.

Philip Kerr is the author of many novels, but perhaps the best known are the nine books featuring Bernie Gunther: March Violets (Viking, 1989), The Pale Criminal (Viking, 1990), A German Requiem (Viking, 1991), The One From the Other (Putnam, 2006), A Quiet Flame (Quercus, 2008), If The Dead Rise Not (Quercus, 2009), Field Grey (Quercus, 2010), Prague Fatale (Quercus, 2011), and A Man Without Breath (Quercus, 2013). The first three make up a trilogy published as Berlin Noir.

The comarca (local district) of La Cerdanya (Spain) contains the upper part of the Segre river valley, and lies in the centre of the Catalan Pyrenes (Spain), between France, Andorra and the comarques of El Ripollès, El Berguedà and L’Alt Urgell (Spain). It has a total surface area of 546 m2 and a population of 12,500 spread amongst a total of 126 municipal areas. Administratively speaking, it belongs to Catalonia, Spain, France, Girona, Lleida and the Western Pyrenees. Although it is possible to divide this region in various different ways, such as into L’Alta Cerdanya (the French part of the territory) and La Baixa Cerdanya (the Spanish part), the present administrative divisions separate the French and Spanish parts of the territory. Within the latter, there is a further subdivision between the provinces of Girona and Lleida. This comarca has important tourism resources: ski resorts, fishing, an excellent gastronomy, tremendously beautiful natural scenery, Romanesque monuments and high mountain villages with their own popular folk festivals and traditional sweet dishes. Some of the most popular attractions for visitors include the hiking and cycling routes that pass through its magnificent natural scenery, which is dominated by the Serra del Cadí (Cadi Ridge), and run across the mountain range itself (taken from Ara Lleida).

Carolina Solé’s debut novel, Ojos de hielo (Ice Eyes) is set there.

The Kelly Affair is the third instalment in a series of novelettes featuring Luke Case, a freelance journalist. Each one takes place in a different European city. This time Luke arrives at Granada to meet Simon Kelly. On prison, Kelly got the idea of writing his memoirs. The problem is that being a convicted criminal, he is not legally allowed to make any money from his crimes. If he sells his memoirs, he won’t be able to profit from them. He needs someone, Luke in this case, to play the role of a ghostwriter and split the money 80/20, his way. But things won’t turn out according to plan.

You can read my reviews of the two previous instalments clicking on the titles: Red Esperanto and Death On A Hot Afternoon.

With the masterful narrative that we expect from Paul D Brazill, The Kelly Affair catches the reader by surprise. Some secrets will come to light. And the reader is left wondering what will happen next.

Bitter Lemon Press, 2007. Translated from the Italian by Howard Curtis. First published in Italian as Ragionevoli dubbi by Sellerio editore Palermo, 2006.ISBN: 978-1-904738-24-4. 250 pages.

Reasonable Doubts is the third instalment in the mystery series featuring Bari’s lawyer Guido Guerrieri.

At the age of forty-two, Guerrieri feels that his life is about to have a meaning when his lover, Margherita, wants to talk to him. He thinks she is expecting a baby. But she has received an offer to work in New York for a major advertising agency. She may be away several months, perhaps a year, if she accepts. Guerrieri has no doubt she has made up her mind, and, maybe, even has said yes.

Life goes on and Guerrieri survives immersed on his work. One day a certain Fabio Paolicelli wants to appoint him his defence counsel. During a visit to prison to study his case, Guerrieri believes having recognized him as a Fascist thug, Fabio “Rayban”, with whom he has an old score to settle. Paolicelli, who does not remember him, is serving a sentence for drug trafficking.

In a random check at the port of Bari, the custom’s police found forty kilos of cocaine hidden under the bodyshell of his car. He claims his innocence and maintains he knows nothing about the drug. Someone put it there without him noticing when he was returning from a holiday in Montenegro with his wife and daughter. Guerrieri can’t accept Fabio Rayban’s defence, he is probably guilty. and has been given the right sentence. But he changes his mind after meeting Paolicelli’s beautiful wife, Natsu Kawabata.

Reasonable Doubts is written in the first person by Guerrieri himself, like the rest of the series, allowing the reader to find out what he thinks and what he actually says. Needless to say that, usually, he doesn’t say what he thinks. I find that the book title has a much broader sense. Everyone has reasonable doubts. Natsu has her own doubts about the innocence of her husband. Guerrieri also has doubts. Is Paolicelli the same person he remembers as Rayban? Did everything happened as described? Guerrieri also casts some doubts about his own ability as a practicing lawyer or, even, to handle this case. Finally the reader also wonders where lies the truth at the end of the book. In a nutshell an excellent addition to an excellent series.

My rating: 4/5.

My reviews of the other books in the series are available by clicking on the book title: Involuntary Witness, A Walk in the Dark and Temporary Perfections. The books can be read as a standalone. In fact, I did not follow their chronological order. However I would suggest, for a better understanding of the main character, that you do so.

Borkmann’s Point won in 1994 the Best Swedish Crime Novel Award by the Swedish Crime Writers’ Academy. It is the second book in Håkan Nesser’s Van Veeteren Mystery series, the first to be translated into English. The story opens in early September. As in the rest of the series, it is set in an unnamed country that, sometimes, can be identified with the Netherlands but with some characteristics from other northern European countries.

Chief Inspector Van Veeteren has been on vacation and is about to return to work when he is asked to assist in the investigation of two crimes. The local team is rather small and Van Veeteren will count with the help of Münster as his sidekick. Two men have been brutally beheaded with a sharp weapon in Kaalbringen, a small costal town nearby. The local chief of police is about to retire within a month. This is the most serious case he has faced in his career. The first murder took place two months ago. The second happened last night. The victims have nothing in common. However, both have recently settled in Kaalbringen. When the investigation is at standstill a third body is discovered with his head cut off. Now the murder weapon, an axe, is found hanging off the body. The third victim had no connection whatsoever with the other two, except that he had also recently arrived in Kaalbringen. A large amount of information is collected, but no pattern. The investigation unfolds also with the participation of a local female inspector, Beate Moerk, highly qualified. The book title is some sort of a riddle that will be explained later in the narrative.

I must confess I have a soft spot for this series since I read the first book The Mind’s Eye. You can find my review HERE. I’ve also read The Inspector and Silence and Hour of the Wolf, which is still my favourite so far. I’m looking forward to read the ten books in the series, the ninth has just been published in English recently. Maybe Borkmann’s Point is not Nesser at his best but it’s a worthwhile read with some interesting characters. In particular Beate Moerk has a lot of potential in my view. Besides, who said Nordic writers have no sense of humour? Frankly, I really enjoyed this book and found its dialogues very attractive. Perhaps the solution is far too predictable, but I certainly enjoyed the ride. Inspector Van Veeteren is quite a character, occasionally you can find him irritating by the way he acts. However he is a sharp thinker, highly intuitive and an acute observer who has only one unsolved case in his career. He can also be cantankerous and irritable but he enjoys a beer or more and loves good wines and enjoys the pleasures of good food. He is a good talker and likes to relax playing chess. It is also quite interesting how Nesser introduces some chapters from the perspective of the murderer, while keeping the reader hooked, without given away too much.

“Allow me to introduce Chief Inspector Van Veteeren, who’s come her to solve the case for us”, said Bausen.
Moerk and Kropke stood up.
“Bausen’s the man in charge,” said Van Veeteren. “I’m only here to help out … if and when needed.”
“You’ll be needed all right,” said Bausen. ” This is the whole Kaalbringen force. Plus the lesser ranks, of course, although I wouldn’t expect too much of them if I were you.”
“Inspector Kropke”, said Kropke, standing to attention.
“Idiot, thought Beate Moerk, and introduced herself.
“Inspector Moerk is responsible for all the charm and intuition we have to offer,” said Bausen. “I would advise you not to understimate her.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” said Van Veeteren.
“Right shall we get going? Bausen started to roll up his shirtsleeves. “Is there any coffee?”
