>You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger

You_will_meet_a_tall_dark_stranger_ver3 Begoña and I went yesterday night to see this film. I have not posted any comments recently, just because none of the latest films I’ve seen have been worthwhile.

Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger follows a pair of married couples, Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma Jones), and their daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) and husband Roy (Josh Brolin), as their passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds.

After Alfie leaves Helena to pursue his lost youth and a free-spirited call girl named Charmaine (Lucy Punch), Helena abandons rationality and surrenders her life to the loopy advice of a charlatan fortune teller.

Unhappy in her marriage, Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery owner boss, Greg (Antonio Banderas), while Roy, a novelist nervously awaiting the response to his latest manuscript, becomes moonstruck over Dia (Freida Pinto), a mystery woman who catches his gaze through a nearby window.

Despite these characters‘ attempts to dodge their problems with pipe dreams and impracticable plans, their efforts lead only to heartache, irrationality, and perilous hot water.

Taking its title from the prediction fortune tellers use to beguile their marks, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger illustrates with wry humour how easy it is for our illusions to make fools of us all.

For my taste this is a lesser film by Woody Allen, much better than the last two I’ve seen: Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Whatever Works (2009), which were downright bad, but far away from Allen’s best, Cassandra’s Dreams (2007) and Match Point (2005). The argument is really weak. But having said that I must admit I’ve enjoyed it. The actors’ superb performances save the film.

My rate 3 out of 5.

>Eight Questions

I’ve been tagged in a game (or meme) that goes like this, I answer a series of questions with entertaining comments (whatever that means, anyhow it’s up to you to decide). (Dorte how can I resist in view of your kind invitation). Then I tag others who do the same on their blogs (this last point I will skip if you don’t mind, but anybody who read this post is invited to participate if they so wish).

1. If you could have any superpower, what would you have? Why?

Make people around me happy. Don’t think I’ll need to explain why.

2. Who is your style icon?

Not sure what’s the meaning of “style icon”. My icon anyway is Sara Baras. HERE.

3. What is your favourite quote?

Any quote from Rafael Guerra “Guerrita” (1862 – 1941) famous Spanish bullfighter. Particularly: “What can’t be done, can’t be done and in addition to that it’s impossible” ("Lo que no pue sé no pue sé y ademá es imposible"). I used it very often when things go wrong.

4. What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?

Friendship is the best compliment I can receive.

5. What playlist/cd is in your CD player right now?

BOCCHERINI.La Música Nocturna de Madrid. You can listen HERE.

6. Are you a night owl or a morning person?

I used to be a night owl when I was younger. Now I’m much more a morning person.

7. Do you prefer dogs or cats?

Dogs, but won’t have any in an apartment house in Madrid.

8. What is the meaning behind your blog name.

I like it because it’s open to different interpretations. HERE is one possible explanation, it does reflect two of my favourite pastimes, crime fiction and bridge.

Have fun.
