>José Antonio Labordeta – In Memoriam

>

The singer-songwriter, writer, schoolteacher and politician José Antonio Labordeta has passed away today, age 75, of prostate cancer. His last book ‘So-so, thanks God’ (Regular, gracias a Dios), released in May, shows his gratitude to his family, friends and doctors during his illness. Labordeta was also director and anchorman of a popular television series ‘Un país en la mochila’ (‘A country in the backpack’). We will miss you, maestro.

Following from Wikipedia: José Antonio Labordeta Subías (10 March 1935 – 19 September 2010), described by The Gran Enciclopedia Aragonesa 2000 (Great Aragonese Encyclopedia) as ‘The most important Aragonese singer-songwriter’, was one of a kind. He began singing in an attempt to give more relevance to his poetry. His songs are anthems, not only in Aragón, but all around Spain. Poetic songs like ‘Aragón’, ‘Canto a la Libertad’ (Song for Freedom), ‘Me dicen que no quieres’ (They tell me you don’t want to) are known all around the Iberian Peninsula. He was also the founder of the Andalán newspaper, which was very influential during the 1970s. From 2000 until retiring in 2008, he represented Zaragoza in the Spanish Congress for Chunta Aragonesista (Aragonese Council), an Aragonese political party. (Characters in bold are mine).

‘Canto a la Libertad’ (Song for Freedom), an hymn to the Spanish democratic transition.

by José Antonio Labordeta

ni tú, ni yo, ni el otro la lleguemos a ver;

Adiós, Labordeta (in Spanish)
