Red Wolf is the fifth book in Liza Marklund’s series featuring journalist Annika Bengtzon and the first one I’ve read. The series starts with The Bomber but it doesn’t follow a chronological order. After the first book the narration moves back several years before but on Red Wolf we are back to the present. Annika is still recovering from her traumatic experience when she was taken hostage by a serial killer on The Bomber. Although she has resigned as head of the crime team, she is still working for the Evening Post as an independent investigative reporter. When the story opens she wants to fly to Lulea. A local journalist has new information on a case she is currently investigating; the explosion, back in 1969, of a fighter-plane in the middle of a military base at Kallax Heath outside Lulea. The Defence Department has kept a lid on this. On arrival, she finds out the journalist has died on a hit-an-run accident. But before returning back to Stockholm, she discovers it was no accident but premeditated murder. Two other murders follow and she uncovers evidence that links them. She tells her editor-in-chief but he won’t allow her to write about it given its political implications. In the meantime she finds out that her husband is being unfaithful. A murderer is on the loose. Annika’s career, her marriage and her life are in danger.
To be quite honest I have not fully enjoy reading this book since I have not been able to find the main plot convincing enough. Besides I could not care less what might happen to Annika’s marriage. I found it a bit tedious despite the excellent reviews that you can find below from people whose opinion I highly regard. Please do read them first and then decide.
Liza Marklund is a Swedish author, publisher, journalist, columnist, and goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. Her crime novels, most of which feature the fictional character Annika Bengtzon, a newspaper journalist, have sold more than 12 million copies in 30 languages to date. Red Wolf (Lobo Rojo) es el quinto libro de la serie de Liza Marklund protagonizado por la periodista Annika Bengtzon y el primero que he leído. La serie comienza con Dinamita, pero luego no continúa por orden cronológico. Después del primer libro la narración se desarrolla años atrás, pero en Red Wolf regresamos al presente. Annika está recuperandose de su traumática experiencia cuando fue tomada como rehén por un asesino en serie en Dinamita. Aunque ha renunciado a su puesto de jefe del equipo sobre delincuencia, continúa trabajando para el Evening Post como una periodista de investigación independiente. La historia comienza cuando quiere volar a Lulea. Un periodista local tiene nueva información sobre un caso que está investigando, la explosión, en 1969, de un avión de combate dentro de una base militar en Kallax Heath a las afueras de Lulea. El Departamento de Defensa lo ha mantenido oculto. A su llegada, descubre que el periodista ha muerto atropellado por un conductor que se dio a la fuga pero, antes de regresar a Estocolmo, descubre que no fue un accidente sino un asesinato premeditado. Para ser honesto no he disfrutadocon la lectura de este libro ya que no he sido capaz de encontrar suficientemente convincente su trama principal. Además no me podía importar menos lo que le pudiera suceder al matrimonio de Annika. Me ha parecido un poco aburrido a pesar de las excelentes reseñas que se pueden encontrar a continuación de personas cuya opinión tengo en alta estima. Por favor leanlas primero y luego decidan.
