Echoes from the Dead (originally published in Sweden as Skumtimmen) is Johan Theorin’s debut novel. In 2007 it was voted Best First Mystery Novel by the authors and critics of the Swedish Academy of Crime, and the winner of the 2009 CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger.
The story opens when five-year-old Jens Davidsson escapes from his grandparents’ house in Götland and gets lost in the mist, disappearing without a trace. Twenty years after, his mother, Julia, has failed to rebuild her life as a nurse in Gothenburg. One day she receives a call from her father, Gerlof, a retired sea captain still living on the island. Gerlof has received a boy’s sandal on the post. He believes the sandal belonged to his grandson and it might provide some clue about what could have happened. But when Julia and Gerlof begin their search everything points out to Nils Kant, a criminal known to delight in the pain of others, but Nils Kant was dead and had been buried years before Jens disappeared.
Echoes of the Dead is masterfully told through two parallel stories in alternating chapters, that take place in different periods of time, thus increasing the reader’s interest. The atmosphere is wonderfully captured and the landscape of the island is constantly present. A great book that speaks about the anguish of a mother who has lost her son and that will remain for long in my memory. Another excellent novel by Johan Theorin, absolutely brilliant

Julia’s young son goes missing and 20 years later, his sandal is sent to her father Gerlof. Julia’s still fresh anguish, and the old man’s patient piecing together of fragments of the history of the island bad boy, Nils Kant, create a powerful and moving drama with a stunning denouement. The island, misty and deserted, lonely and creepy, is the backdrop which contributes so much atmosphere to a finely written intrigue.’

La hora de las sombras (publicado originalmente en Suecia como Skumtimmen) es la primera novela de Johan Theorin. En 2007 fue elegida como la Mejor Primera Novela de Misterio por autores y críticos de la Academia Sueca de Novela Negra, y ganó el Premio John Creasey otorgado por la CWA (New Blood) Dagger.
La historia comienza cuando un niño de cinco años de edad, Jens Davidsson se escapa de la casa de sus abuelos en Gotland y se pierde entre la niebla, desapareciendo sin dejar rastro. Veinte años después, su madre, Julia, trabaja como enfermera en Gotemburgo pero no ha logrado todavía rehacer su vida. Un día recibe una llamada de su padre, Gerlof, un capitán de navío retirado que aún viven en la isla. Gerlof ha recibido la sandalia de un niño por correo. Él piensa que la sandalia es de su nieto, lo que podría proporcionar alguna pista sobre lo que le podía haber sucedido. You have reminded me how much I enjoyed his first two novels.
