The story revolves around the death, on the very same day, of two men. They are relatives and do bear the same name. Noel Rafferty, a petty criminal and a small-scale drug dealer is shot to death in the beer garden of a Dublin pub, probably the victim of a rivalry between gangs. Hours later his uncle Noel Rafferty, a well respected construction engineer, kills himself in a car crash driving under the influence of an excessive amount of alcohol. A coincidence, perhaps, but Gina Rafferty, her aunt and sister, does not believe in coincidences and starts asking questions on her own. “There has to be a more satisfactory explanation”. Besides she knows that his brother was not a heavy drinker.
During her search, we will meet the rest of the characters. Paddy Norton, a painkiller addict and a property developer, chairman of Winterland properties. Larry Bolger, a compulsive gambler and a cabinet minister with aspirations to become the next Taoiseach. Mark Griffin, the only survivor of a car accident in which all the members of his family died when he was just a child. And Young Noel’s gang leader, Terry ‘The Electrician’ Stack.
Winterland is told in first person from the perspective of different characters. Thus the reader is currently ahead of some of the events narrated. This turns out to be a very powerful tool to capture the reader’s attention in the expert hands of a skilful writer. As a result, the reader gets involved in the plot and finds it difficult to put the book down. An absorbing thriller with a great sense of place and convincing characters. A worthwhile reading. Top notch.
Winterland, is Alan Glynn’s second novel. His debut novel The Dark Fields, was made into a film as Limitless – starring Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro – in Spring 2011. It has been reprinted later on by Faber & Faber as Limitless. His third novel, Bloodland, has just been released. Alan Glynn is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, where he studied English Literature. He has worked in magazine publishing in New York and as an EFL teacher in Italy.

Esto resulta ser una herramienta muy poderosa capaz de captar la atención del lector en las manos expertas de un escritor muy hábil. Como resultado, el lector se involucra en la trama y le resulta difícil dejar el libro. Un novela de intriga absorbente con un gran sentido del lugar y con unos personajes muy convincentes. Merece la pena su lectura. De categoría.
