Review: Drive (2011 film) directed by Nicolas Winding Refn

Released in Spain last Wednesday, 28 December 2011, Begoña and I went yesterday to see Drive, an American thriller based on a 2005 novel by James Sallis, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, from a screenplay written by Hossein Amini, and starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, and Albert Brooks.

Drive revolves around an anonymous driver. During the day he acts as a Hollywood stunt driver, besides working as a mechanic. At night he is hired as a getaway driver. One day he meets Irene (Carey Mulligan), his next door neighbour. His life changes. He enjoys spending time with her. He also establishes a special bond with her small son, Benicio (Kaden Leos). One day after serving a sentence, Standard (Oscar Isaac), Irene’s husband and Benicio’s father, is released from prison. To settle an old debt Benicio is forced to commit a robbery. The driver offers himself  to take part but something goes terribly wrong unleashing a wave of violence.

The direction of the film is good and the end result is quite entertaining. However it has some doses of extreme violence, not suitable for everyone. The story is not well developed, the plot has some loose ends and the characters are stereotypes. I did not get excited.

My rating is a 6 out of 10.
