Harry Hole profession or, to put it better, his ‘area of expertise is murder’ and he wants ‘to practise his occupation, to investigate murders.’ He fancy one of the narco murders. ‘Gusto Hanssen, nineteen years old. Known to the police, pushers and users. Found dead in a flat on Hausmanns gate on 12 July. Bled to death after a shot in the chest.’ But Gunnar Hagen, the head of Oslo’s Crime Squad, has about a hundred reasons why Harry will never be put on that case. The case has already been solved. Beyond that he doesn’t have any vacancies, he’s trying to make cuts. Moreover he is not eligible, he is no longer a police officer. But Harry is not convinced that the killer has been found and he is now on his own.
‘I know why you’ve come, of course,’ Rakel said. ‘But what exactly have you got planned?’
‘To find out if Oleg’s guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.’
‘Because?’
Harry shrugged. ‘Because I’m a detective. Because this is the way we’ve organised this anthill. No one can be convicted until we’re sure.’
‘And you’re not sure?’
‘No, I’m not sure.’
‘And that’s the only reason you’re here?’
As a regular reader of this series, I was looking forward to the release of Phantom, and I’ve found that Nesbø has outdone himself. I understand that he refers to Phantom as the darker and more sinister of his books. For me this is his most personal book so far. Fortunately enough its open ending anticipates the continuation of the series. If still not convinced, you’ll find more reasons to read this book in the reviews below.

Tres años después de los sucesos narrados en The Leopard Harry Hole ha regresado a Oslo. “Todo era nuevo. Todo seguía igual”. Los políticos han hecho lo que mejor saben hacer,”amontonar la mierda debajo de la alfombra”. “El mercado de las drogas (está) bajo control. … Hay menos bandas y ahora no hay luchas internas. Las estadísticas de sobredosis están, …, disminuyendo“.
La profesión de Harry Hole o, mejor dicho, su “área de experiencia es el asesinato” y quiere “practicar su oficio, investigar asesinatos.” Desea investigar uno en particular el asesinato de un narco. “Gusto Hanssen, de diecinueve años de edad. Conocido por la policía, por los traficantes y por los drogadictos. Fue encontrado muerto en un piso en Hausmannsgate el 12 de julio. Se desangró hasta morir después de recibir un tiro en el pecho.” Pero Gunnar Hagen, el jefe de la Brigada Criminal de Oslo, tiene más de un centenar de razones para no encargar a Harry este asunto. El caso ya está resuelto. Además no tiene vacante alguna, está intentando hacer recortes. Por otra parte ya no está cualificado, ya no es policía. Sin embargo Harry no está convencido de que hayan encontrado al asesino y ahora está solo.
“Yo sé por qué has venido, por supuesto “, dijo Rakel. “Pero, ¿qué tienes pensado hacer?”
“Averiguar si Oleg es culpable más allá de cualquier duda razonable”.
“¿Por qué?”
Harry se encogió de hombros. “Porque soy un detective. Porque esta es la forma en que hemos organizado este hormiguero. Nadie puede ser condenado hasta que estemos seguros.”
“¿Y no estás seguro? ‘
“No, no estoy seguro.”
“¿Y es esa la única razón por la que estás aquí?”
Como lector habitual de esta serie, yo estaba esperando con impaciencia la publicación de Phantom, y he encontrado que Nesbø se ha superado a sí mismo. Tengo entendido que se refiere a Phantomcomo el más oscuro y el más siniestro de sus libros. Para mí, este es su libro más personal hasta la fecha. Afortunadamente su final abierto anticipa la continuación de la serie. Si todavía no está convencido, encontrará más razones para leer este libro en las reseñas en inglés.
