This is the seventh book, in a series of ten, featuring Chief Inspector Van Veeteren. In the first five Van Veeteren is in charge of the Maardam CID, but in the last books he has left the police department “to freewheel down the path to his retirement as part-owner and shop assistant in Krantze’s antiquarian bookshop in Kupinskis Gränd”. However The Chief Inspector has always meant Chief Inspector Van Veeteren and he even helps with the investigations sometimes. Maardam is a fictional town located in an unnamed country in Northern Europe, although some names and features are typically Dutch.
In this instalment Van Veeteren is directly involved in the case and the police will spare no efforts to solve the case:
“…, there were seven officers leading the investigation. Inspectors Moreno, Rooth and Jung. Constable Krause, just as young and promising as usual. Intendent deBries and a newly appointed Detective-Sargent Bollmert on loan from Aarlach until Intendent Múnster returned from his duties in connection with the official inquiry; Múnster was taking it easy after being stabbed in the kidney while on duty ten months ago. …Plus himself of course: Chief Inspector Reinhart.”
In the dead of night, in the pouring rain, a drunk driver runs over a young man. He leaves the body at the side of the road and runs away. This incident will set in motion a chain of events that will change his life forever.
The English title refers to the time between night and dawn in which the wolf is said to lurk outside people’s homes. The original title more accurately reflects the theme of the book. Carambole means cannon. In billiards it is a stroke in which a ball hits the other two.
‘I read the other day about the billiard ball theory – are you familiar with it? You roll along over a level, green surface among lots of other ball. The speed and directions are fixed, but it’s not possible to work out in advance what’s going to happen ….’
The narrative point of view shifts between the different characters involved, including the culprit and the police investigators, together with Van Veteeren himself. Reading becomes an addiction. The plot is well developed. A rewarding and entertaining police procedural I highly recommend.

Este es el séptimo libro, en una serie de diez, protagonizados por el Inspector Jefe Van Veeteren. En los primeros cinco Van Veeteren está a cargo del Departamento de Investigación Criminal (CID) de Maardam, pero en los últimos libros ha dejado el departamento de policía “para vivir despreocupadamente el camino hacia su jubilación como co-propietario y dependiente en la librería de viejo Krantze en Kupinskis Gränd“. Sin embargo, El Inspector Jefe siempre ha significado el Inspector Jefe Van Veeteren e incluso ayuda en las investigaciones en ocasiones. Maardam es una ciudad ficticia situada en un país no nombrado en el norte de Europa, aunque algunos de sus nombres y de sus características son típicamente holandeses.
En esta entrega Van Veeteren se ve directamente implicado en la trama y la policía no va a escatimar esfuerzo alguno para resolver el caso:
“…, siete oficiales estaban a cargo de la investigación. Los inspectores Moreno, Rooth y Jung. El detective Krause, tan joven y prometedor como de costumbre. El subinspector DeBries y un recién nombrado sargento de policía cedido por Aarlach hasta que el subinspector Munster regresara de sus funciones en relación con una investigación oficial: Münster lo estaba tomando con calma después de haber sido apuñalado en el riñón mientras estaba en servicio hace diez meses. …. Además de él, por supuesto, el Inspector Jefe Reinhart.”
En la oscuridad de la noche, bajo la lluvia, un conductor borracho atropella a un hombre joven. Deja el cuerpo junto a la carretera y huye. Este incidente pondrá en movimiento una cadena de acontecimientos que cambiarán su vida para siempre.
El título en inglés se refiere al tiempo entre la noche y el amanecer en en el que se dice que el lobo está al acecho fuera de las casas de la gente. El título original refleja mejor el tema del libro. Carambole es un golpe en los billares, cuando una bola golpea a las otras dos.
“Leí el otro día sobre la teoría de la bola de billar – ¿Estás familiarizada con ella? Una bola rueda sobre una superficie plana, verde, entre un montón de bolas. Su velocidad y su dirección son fijas, pero no es posible calcular de antemano qué va a pasar …. “
El punto de vista narrativo se mueve entre los diferentes personajes, incluyendo al culpable y los policías involucrados, junto con el propio Van Veteeren. La lectura se convierte en adicción. La trama está muy bien desarrollada. Un gratificante y muy entretenido procedimiento policial que recomiendo encarecidamente.
