Gilbert Keith Chesterton, better known as G. K. Chesterton, was a journalist, novelist and English essayist, who died in 1936, aged 62. He embraced different literary genres and was a prolific author. He wrote around 80 books, several hundred poems, some 200 short stories, 4000 essays, and several plays (from Wikipedia). His most famous character is the priest-detective Father Brown. Father Brown appeared in 53 short stories, most of them compiled in five books, The Innocence of Father Brown (1911), The Wisdom of Father Brown (1914), The Incredulity of Father Brown (1926), The Secret of Father Brown (1927) and The Scandal of Father Brown (1935), and three uncollected stories: The Donnington Affair (1914), The Vampire of the Village (1936, included in later editions of The Scandal of Father Brown), The Mask of Midas (1936).

The innocence of Father Brown (1911) is made up of sixteen short stories that were first published separately in The Saturday Evening Post and The Story-Teller, from July 1910 to June 1911. It’s usually considered one of the most relevant novels in mystery and detective fiction, though the quality of some stories is uneven. My favourites are: The Secret Garden, The Flying Stars, The Wrong Shape, The Hammer of God, and The Three Tools of Death. The Invisible Man and The Queer Feet are also worth reading. The Blue Cross, probably the best known because it is the first Father Brown story, is highly overrated in my view. The Honour of Israel Gow and The Eye of Apollo are below average for my taste. And The Sins of Prince Saradine and The Sign of the Broken Sword are highly disappointing, in my opinion. By the way, it is said that Chesterton himself admitted to have written some of the worst mystery stories in the world.

For an enthusiast of the genre it has an historical interest, since it brings several novelties, including certain social criticism. We must not forget also the time when these stories were written and, thus, they are difficult to judge today.

Given that I don’t consider myself qualified to write my own review of this book, I would recommend reading the excellent entry at Confessions of a Mystery Novelist … by Margot Kinberg: In The Spotlight: G.K. Chesterton’s The Innocence of Father Brown.

Some, if not all the stories. can be downloaded free as an e-book in several sites like Amazon or Project Gutenberg. I did that because my old edition of The Innocence of Father Brown was in Spanish, translated by Alicia Bleiberg (Alianza Editorial, 1988).

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, más conocido como G. K. Chesterton, fue un periodista, novelista y ensayista Inglés, que murió en 1936, a los 62 años de edad. Cultivó distintos géneros literarios y fue un autor prolífico. Escribió unos 80 libros, varios cientos de poemas, unos 200 cuentos, 4.000 ensayos, y varias obras de teatro (de Wikipedia). Su personaje más famoso es el detective-sacerdote Padre Brown. El Padre Brown apareció en 53 historias cortas, la mayoría de ellas recopiladas en cinco libros, El candor del Padre Brown (1911), La sagacidad del Padre Brown (1914), La incredulidad del Padre Brown (1926), El secreto del Padre Brown (1927 ) y El escándalo del Padre Brown (1935), y tres cuentos no incluidos en estas recopilaciones: El caso Donnington (1914), La vampiresa del pueblo (1936, incluido en ediciones posteriores de El escándalo del Padre Brown), La máscara de Midas (1936) .

El candor del Padre Brown (1911) contiene dieciséis historias cortas que se publicaron inicialmente por separado en The Saturday Evening Post y The Story-Teller, entre julio de 1910 y junio de 1911. Por lo general está considerada una de las novelas de misterio más importantes, aunque la calidad de algunos cuentos es desigual. Mis favoritos son: El jardín secreto, Las estrellas errantes, La forma errónea, El martillo de Dios, y Los tres instrumentos de la muerte. El hombre invisible y Las extrañas pisadas también merecen la pena. La cruz azul, probablemente el más conocido por ser la primera historia del Padre Brown, está muy sobrevalorado en mi opinión. El honor de Israel Gow y El ojo de Apolo están por debajo de la media para mi gusto. Y Los pecados de Prince Saradine y La muestra de la espada rota son muy decepcionantes, en mi opinión. Por cierto, se dice que el propio Chesterton admitió haber escrito algunas de las peores historias de misterio del mundo.

Para un entusiasta del género tiene un interés histórico, ya que introduce varias novedades, como una cierta crítica social. No hay que olvidar tampoco el momento en que fueron escritas y, por lo tanto, son difíciles de juzgar hoy en día.
