Review: The Deep Dark Sleep by Craig Russell

So far 1995 had been a very good year for Lennox. He had a client list and a set of balanced accounts that he could wave in front of the taxman and the occasional inquisitive copper to prove that his business was legitimate. ‘Well, at least much more legitimate than it had been a year or two before.’ ‘The problem was, when someone like The Three Kings got a hold of you, they didn’t like to let go.’

When the story begins Lennox had just finished three divorces and one missing person cases. He is also in charge for the security of a shipyard. He is particularly grateful to Jock Ferguson for the latter job. Jock had been his contact at the City of Glasgow Police and had vouched him; which was quite something, given that he was aware of his relationship with The Three Kings. In any case Lennox had made a real effort to stay out of their way.

The discovery of a pile of bones during drainage of the Clyde didn’t get the media attention until a few days later when the remains were identified as belonging to Gentleman Joe Strachan, Glasgow’s most successful and ruthless armed robber. Gentleman Joe was regarded the mastermind behind the history of Glasgow’s most audacious robbery, that took place at the Empire Exhibition in 1938. Although it could not be proved. This event probably would have escaped the attention of Lennox, had he not been visited by Isa and Violet.

‘Isa and Violet were identically petite, identically pretty, with identically large blue eyes. Which was not surprising: they were identical twins. I worked that out as soon as I saw them. It’s the kind of detail people expect you to notice when you’re a detective.’ 

The twins, Isa and Violet, are Joseph Strachan’s daughters. Every year since 1938, they receive a thousand pounds each on the twenty-third of July. This date is the anniversary of the Empire Exhibition robbery. Their mother had passed away a couple of years ago, but before that, she also got the same amount of money. Now they wanted to know who’s been sending them the money, if it was not their father.

It so happened that the young policeman who was shot and killed by the Empire Exhibition robbers was a close friend and drinking buddy of Superintendent McNab who, at the time, was also himself a young Police Constable. 

The day before the visit of the twins, Lennox had received a phone call asking for an appointment to see him. Donald Fraser, a solicitor, would appreciate to meet him at his office in St. Vincent Street on a matter of great delicacy. He was not authorized to divulge more telephonically.

The matter in question concerns an American actor who was participating in a film that was being shot in Scotland. Fraser represented the UK interest of the film producers.The actor and the Duke of Stathlorne’s only son and heir were being blackmailed with some photographs which, if divulged, could damage their reputation. Lennox’s mission was to hand over the money, secure the negatives and make sure that all copies are destroyed.

And Lennox will put his life in danger when he accepts both assignments.

Little more I can add to what I have already said in my previous reviews about the Lennox series by Craig Russell. I really enjoy Russel’s ‘hardboiled’ style. And Lennox is a very attractive and suggestive character. Much has been praised the sense of place in the series, but I believe that is the choice of the period of time in which the story unfolds what is really interesting in these novels. Russell offers great entertainment, some humour and also provides a thought-provoking read. The Deep Dark Sleep is probably the best book in the series so far. Highly recommended. I’m currently reading the fourth instalment, Dead Men and Broken Hearts, stay tuned.

El sueño oscuro y profundo de Craig Rusell

Hasta ahora 1995 había sido un año muy bueno para Lennox. Tenía una lista de clientes y un conjunto de cuentas equilibradas que podía esgrimir ante el inspector de Hacienda y el ocasional policía curioso para demostrar que su negocio era legítimo. “Bueno, al menos mucho más legítimo de lo que había sido uno o dos años atrás.” “El problema era que cuando alguien como Los Tres Reyes tiene un cierto poder sobre ti, no les gusta dejarlo.”

Cuando la historia comienza Lennox acababa de terminar tres casos de divorcio y uno de persona desaparecida. También está a cargo de la seguridad de un astillero. Está especialmente agradecido a Jock Ferguson por este último trabajo. Jock había sido su contacto en la policía de la Ciudad de Glasgow y le había avalado, lo cual era bastante, dado que estaba al corriente de su relación con Los Tres Reyes. En cualquier caso Lennox había hecho un verdadero esfuerzo para mantenerse alejado de ellos.

El descubrimiento de un montón de huesos durante el drenaje del Clyde no tuvo la atención de los medios hasta unos días más tarde, cuando los restos fueron identificados como pertenecientes a Gentleman Joe Strachan, el ladrón armado con más éxito y más despiadado de Glasgow. Me dí cuenta de esto en cuanto las vi. Este es la clase de detalle que la gente espera de uno cuando se dan cuenta de que eres detective.’

Las gemelas, Isa y Violet, son hijas de Joseph Strachan. Cada año desde 1938, reciben 1.000 libras cada una el veintitrés de julio. Esta fecha es el aniversario del robo en la Exposición del Imperio. Su madre había fallecido hace un par de años, pero antes de eso, ella también había recibido la misma cantidad. Ahora quieren saber quién ha estado mandando ese dinero, si no era su padre.

Se daba la circunstancia de que el joven policía que murió a consecuencia de un disparo de los ladrones de la Exposición del Imperio Británico era un amigo cercano y compañero de bares del Superintendente McNab quién, en aquel entonces, también era él mismo un joven agente de policía.

El día anterior a la visita de las gemelas, Lennox había recibido una llamada telefónica pidiendole una cita para entrevistarse con él. Donald Fraser, un abogado, le agradecería si pudiera reunirse con él en su oficina en la calle San Vicente, por un asunto de gran delicadeza. Él no estaba autorizado a divulgar más telefónicamente.

El asunto en cuestión se refiere a un actor estadounidense que participaba en una película que estaba siendo rodada en Escocia. Fraser representaba los intereses en el Reino Unido de los productores de la película. El actor y el hijo único y heredero del Duque de Stathlorne estaban siendo extorsionados con algunas fotografías que, de divulgarse, podrían dañar su reputación. La misión de Lennox consistía en entregar el dinero, obtener los negativos y asegurarse de que todas las copias sean destruidas.

Y Lennox pondrá su vida en peligro cuando acepte ambas tareas.

Poco más puedo añadir a lo que ya he dicho en mis comentarios anteriores acerca de la serie Lennox de Craig Russell. Me gusta mucho el estilo ‘hardboiled “de Russel. Y Lennox es un personaje muy atractivo y sugerente. Mucho se ha elogiado el sentido de lugar en la serie, pero creo que es la elección del período de tiempo en que se desarrolla la historia lo que es realmente interesante en estas novelas. Russell nos ofrece un gran entretenimiento, algo de humor y también nos proporciona una lectura muy estimulante. El sueño oscuro y profundo es probablemente el mejor libro de la serie hasta ahora. Muy recomendable. Actualmente estoy leyendo la cuarta entrega, Dead Men and Broken Hearts, permanezcan sintonizados.
