Bruguera Club de Misterio
In the late seventies, a collection of 149 books was released in Spain by the Publisher House Bruguera under the title Club de Misterio (Mystery Club). The collection was made up of a good repertoire of detective novels, mystery fiction and thrillers. Each book had around eighty pages, in paperback, and the book size was of approximately 17.5 cm by 23.5 cm. Due to the simplicity of its edition, it’s now difficult to find copies in perfect conditions. Don’t ask me the criteria for this selection.
Not everyone is on the list, but everyone on it is someone in the genre (my free translation of a Spanish saying).

The Aubrey–Maturin Series
The Aubrey–Maturin series is ‘a sequence of nautical historical novels —20 completed and one unfinished— by Patrick O’Brian, set during the Napoleonic Wars and centring on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship’s surgeon Stephen Maturin, a physician, natural philosopher, and secret agent. The first novel, Master and Commander, was published in 1969 and the last finished novel, Blue at the Mizzen, in 1999.’
‘The 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World took material from books in this series, notably Master and Commander, HMS Surprise, The Letter of Marque, The Fortune of War, and particularly The Far Side of the World. Review: Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin

Saints of the Shadow Bible is the nineteenth instalment in the Inspector Rebus series. The action takes place during the campaign for an independent Scotland, the actual Referendum will take place on Thursday 18 September 2014. Also at the background of the story, the Double Jeopardy Reform that came into force in Scotland on 28 November 2011, plays an important role. As from that date, with retrospective effects and under special circumstances, the reform allows to reopen a new trial. Likewise we read in the Prologue that: ‘The eight regional Scottish forces were soon to be merged into something called Police Scotland. The Chief Constable of Strathclyde had been given the top job, leaving seven of his colleagues scratching around for fresh opportunities.’
This changing environment also affects some of the main characters in the story. John Rebus is now back on active duty (in the previous book, Rebus was working in a civilian capacity), but had to accept being demoted to detective sergeant to rejoin the force, due to a surfeit of Detective Inspectors. While Malcolm Fox is about to leave the Complaints, the internal-affairs office, and return to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID.
DI Siobhan Clarke and DS John Rebus, now with reversed responsibilities, have been called to investigate a car accident. A young student at the University of Edinburg called Jessica Traynor was found unconscious at the wheel of her car. Undoubtedly her father seems to have the right friends. But soon Rebus finds the evidence that suggests the girl was not alone in the car and that most likely she was not even driving. To make things worse, her boyfriend happen to be the son of Patrick McCuskey, the Scottish Minister for Justice and face of the Yes campaign for the independence. Besides neither of the two youngsters is willing to talk to the police.
Simultaneously the Solicitor General for Scotland, Elinor Macari, has entrusted Malcolm Fox the job to re-open a case which stretches back some thirty years, under the ‘Double Jeopardy’ Reform that has just come into force. At that time, Stefan Gilmour, now a prominent businessman which campaigns for a No vote to the independence of Scotland, was the Detective Inspector in Summerhall station, with Eamonn ‘Porkbelly’ Paterson and Dod Blantyre, now retired, as detective sergeants, and John Rebus, a lowly detective constable, alongside a younger DC called Frazer Spence, who died a decade ago in a motorbike crash in Greece. They were all known as The Saints of the Shadow Bible, and the shadow of their past is threatening them now.
According to Ian Rankin’s official website the title … is taken from a Jackie Leven song, ‘One Man, One Guitar’. But actually it refers to the book, on which they all had sworn mutual loyalty .
For my taste Ian Rankin dazzles us again with what is probably one of his best novels in the series. I loved it and I have spent great moments in its company. In addition Rankin offers us some magnificent dialogues, his house mark. The Rebus character, far from boring me, I find it fascinating. Don’t miss it!

Ian Rankin on Saints of the Shadow Bible
Reseña: Saints of the Shadow Bible de Ian Rankin
Saints of the Shadow Bible (que se podría traducir algo así como Los santos de la biblia en la sombra) es la decimonovena entrega de la serie protagonizada por el inspector Rebus. La acción se desarrolla en plena campaña por una Escocia Independiente, el referéndum real tendrá lugar el jueves 18 de septiembre de 2014. También en el transfondo de la historia juega un papel importante la reforma de la disposición “non bis in idem”, que entró en vigor en Escocia el 28 de noviembre de 2011. A partir de esa fecha la nueva disposición permite, con caracter retroactivo y en circunstancias especiales volver a abrir un nuevo juicio sobre algo ya juzgado. Así mismo leemos en el Prólogo que: “Las ocho fuerzas de policía regionales de Escocia se integrarán pronto en algo llamado Policía de Escocia. El jefe de la policía de Strathclyde ha sido nombrado su máximo responsable, dejando a siete de sus colegas en busca de nuevas oportunidades.”
Este entorno cambiante afecta también a algunos de los personajes principales de la historia. John Rebus está ahora de regreso en el servicio activo (en el libro anterior, Rebus estaba trabajando como civil), pero ha tenido que aceptar ser degradado a sargento detective para reincorporarse a la fuerza, debido a un exceso de inspectores detectives. Mientras Malcolm Fox está a punto de salir de la oficina de asuntos internos, y regresar al Departamento de Investigación Criminal, CID.
La DI Siobhan Clarke y el DS John Rebus DS, ahora con responsabilidades invertidas, acuden a investigar un accidente de coche. Una joven estudiante de la Universidad de Edimburgo llamada Jessica Traynor fue encontrada inconsciente al volante de su automovil. Sin lugar a dudas su padre parece tener los amigos adecuados. Según el sitio web oficial de Ian Rankin el título … está tomado de una canción de Jackie Leven,‘One Man, One Guitar’. Pero en realidad se refiere al libro, sobre el que todos ellos habían jurado lealtad mutua.
Para mi gusto Ian Rankin nos deslumbra de nuevo con la que probablemente sea una de sus mejores novelas en la serie. Me encantó y he pasado grandes momentos en su compañía. Además Rakin nos ofrece unos magníficos diálogos, marca de la casa. El personaje Rebus, lejos de aburrirme, me resulta fascinante. ¡No te la pierdas!

Review: Sacrifices by Roger Smith

In an interview with Joanne Hichens, Roger Smith himself has summarised this book as follows: The story is set in Cape Town, in the affluent suburb of Newlands and on the Cape Flats. ‘A wealthy white couple have —as many do— assumed responsibility for the education of their mixed race live-in domestic worker’s children, a girl and a boy. The kids grow up marooned between classes and ethnicities and while the girl chooses to go to Cape Town university, the boy is drawn toward the world of drugs and gangs on the Cape Flats. When the son of the white couple —a spoiled, golden boy— commits a terrible crime, his parents decide to frame their domestic worker’s kid. Even though they get away with the deception (this is South Africa, cops and courts are all too eager for a “win”) they open a Pandora’s box of revenge and retribution that is particularly horrifying.’
Ever since I read Mixed Blood (you can access my review by clicking on the book title), Roger Smith became one of my favourite writers. Subsequently I read his novella Ishmael Toffee and Capture. For my taste, they all are worthwhile and Sacrifices is no exception. It’s worth noting the author’s ability to describe the emotions and the mental state of the main characters, Smith makes us feel as if we are in their place. My only quibble, however, is a rather uneven plot development, although this may be just my personal impression.

En una entrevista con Joanne Hichens el propio Roger Smith ha resumido este libro así: La historia se desarrolla en Ciudad del Cabo, en el acomodado barrio residencial de Newlands y en la zona pobre de los Cape Flats. ‘Una adinerada pareja de raza blanca, como muchas otras, se hace responsable de la educación de los hijos, una chica y un chico, de su empleada doméstica interna de raza mestiza. Los chicos crecen aislados entre etnias y clases sociales y mientras la niña decide ir a la universidad de Ciudad del Cabo, el niño se siente atraido por el mundo de las drogas y de las pandillas en Cape Flats. Cuando el hijo de la pareja blanca, un niño rico mimado, comete un crimen terrible, sus padres deciden echarle la culpa al hijo de su empleada doméstica. Y aunque ellos consiguen que el engaño prospere (esto es Sudáfrica, la policía y los tribunales se encuentran excesivamente ansiosos por lograr una “victoria”) abren una caja de Pandora de venganza y de castigo que es especialmente espeluznante.’
Desde que leí Mixed Blood (se puede acceder a mi reseña haciendo clic en el título del libro), Roger Smith se convirtió en uno de mis escritores favoritos. Posteriormente leí su novela corta Ishmael Toffee y Capture. Para mi gusto, todas valen la pena y Sacrificios no es ninguna excepción. Merece la pena destacar la capacidad del autor para describir las emociones y el estado mental de los personajes principales, Smith nos hace sentir como si estuviéramos en su lugar. Mi única objeción, sin embargo, es un desarrollo de la trama bastante desigual, aunque esto puede ser sólo mi impresión personal.

Roger Smith es uno de los escritores sudafricanos de mayor éxito. Debutó en el 2009 con su thriller Mixed Blood, galardonado con el Premio Deutscher Krimi en el 2010 y que fue nominado por la revista Spinetingler a la mejor novela en los Estados Unidos. Posteriormente, ha publicado Wake Up Dead (2010), Diablos de polvo (2011), la novela corta Ishmael Toffee (2012), Capture (2012) y Sacrifices (2013). Con el seudónimo de Max Wilde escribe novelas de terror y ha publicado Vile Blood en el 2012 .
