Bruguera Club de Misterio

In the late seventies, a collection of 149 books was released in Spain by the Publisher House Bruguera under the title Club de Misterio (Mystery Club). The collection was made up of a good repertoire of detective novels, mystery fiction and thrillers. Each book had around eighty pages, in paperback, and the book size was of approximately 17.5 cm by 23.5 cm. Due to the simplicity of its edition, it’s now difficult to find copies in perfect conditions. Don’t ask me the criteria for this selection.

Not everyone is on the list, but everyone on it is someone in the genre (my free translation of a Spanish saying).

Please let me know of any possible errors or omissions.

Some of the covers are:

  1. How interesting! The covers are great, too!

You say the books were 80 pages each. Were they abridged, or was it just that the print was very small (or the page format very large)?

    • Good question. I really don’t know. The Moonstone was published in two volumes. Other books I know are short stories but I certainly don’t know. Probably some were abridged to fall within the required format. My copy of Roseanna in Spanish has 170 pages. .

      • I read Roseanna just the other day in English, and it has I think 205 pages. A good typographer could easily have got it into 170 without doing anything obnoxious. So my guess is that the two languages fill roughly the same space. (Oddly, I’d always assumed Spanish was the “longer” of the two.)

My copy of The Moonstone is buried somewhere around the house and I haven’t got time to go search for it, but my guess is the text is around 120,000 to 140,000 words. Even taking the shoter measure, getting 60,000 words into 80 pages would take some doing. In ordinary formats you generally reckon to get ~350 words a page, maybe 400; so 750 words a page would be a heck of a squeeze!

Mind you, it’s a biggish page format so maybe they laid the text out magazine-style, with two or three columns. That must be it. 750 words per page is doable that way . . .

Sorry, just thinking out loud here!

    • I’ve just been told (in a comment below in Spanish) that the print is very small, in two columns and, obviously, difficult to read, I’ll check in a secondhand bookstore, if can find any book available..

  2. A fantastic collection Jose ignacio – there are a few authors I have not read (like Scerbanenco and Vian) but otherwise these are great – there are no books here I wouldn’t want in my library!

  3. A mi también me encantan las portadas pero el interior es imposible, a dos columnas y con letra enana. Me he dejado los ojos leyendo “El juguete mortífero” o “La bestia debe morir”.

    • I love those covers Margot. The list looks quite impressive and brings tons of memories, some titles are best known becuase they were brought to the screen and are part of our collective imagination.
