To Have and Have Not is a 1944 American film directed by Howard Hawks. Although nominally based on the homonymous novel by Ernest Hemingway, the story was extensively altered for the film. Jules Furthman and William Faulkner appear in the film credits as script-writers. It stars Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan, and a very young Lauren Bacall in her first film.
It is said that one drunken night, Howard Hawks bet Hemingway that he could take what both considered his worst novel – To Have and Have Not – and turn it into a screen hit. To do it, Hawks borrowed quite a bit from Casablanca.
The story takes place in the summer of 1940 in Martinique, shortly after the fall of France and the installation of the Vichy regime. Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) captains a pleasure fishing boat. One day the French Resistance requests his help. They need to bring into the island two people smuggled. Morgan doesn’t want to get involved, but a couple of plot twists leave him broke when he most needs the money to help a mysterious young woman, Marie (‘Slim’) Browning (Lauren Bacall), who’s just arrive to the island.
Not a masterpiece, but a must for anyone who loves the glamour of old Hollywood and a legendary romance.
Last Tuesday Lauren Bacall would have turned ninety.

Tener y no tener es una película americana de 1944 dirigida por Howard Hawks. Aunque nominalmente basada en la novela homónima de Ernest a Hemingway, el argumento fue extensivamente modificado en la película. Jules Furthman y William Faulkner aparecen en los créditos como guionistas. Está protagonizada por Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan, y una jovencísima Lauren Bacall en su primera película.
Se dice que una noche de borrachera, Howard Hawks apostó a Hemingway que podía tomar la que ambos consideraban que era su peor novela, Tener y no tener, y convertirla en un éxito de pantalla. Para hacerlo, Hawks tomó prestado no pocas ideas de Casablanca.
La historia se desarrolla en el verano de 1940 en Martinica, poco después de la caída de Francia y la instalación del régimen de Vichy. Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) capitanea un barco de pesca de recreo. Un día la resistencia francesa solicita su ayuda. Tienen que traer a la isla a dos personas de contrabando. Morgan no quiere involucrarse, pero un par de giros en la trama le dejan sin blanca cuando más necesita el dinero para ayudar a una misteriosa joven, Marie (‘Flaca’) Browning (Lauren Bacall), que acaba de llegar a la isla.
No es una obra maestra, pero es indispensable para todos aquellos a los que les guste el glamour del viejo Hollywood y un romance legendario.
The Port of Canencia is a mountain pass in the northern part of the Community of Madrid. It is located at the foot of the Sierra de la Morcuera and communicates the municipalities of Miraflores de la Sierra and Canencia, which takes its name from the port. It’s one of the lowest mountain passes of the Sierra de Guadarrama and given its local character, is one of the less travelled. However, it’s popular on weekends and holidays, for its landscape and environmental values. It offers an excellent opportunity for strolling by its low degree of difficulty.

Based on the homonymous novel by John le Carré, A Most Wanted Man is a British espionage-thriller film, directed by Anton Corbijn. The screenplay was written by Andrew Bovell and it stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright, Daniel Brühl and Nina Hoss. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and competed in the main competition section of the 36th Moscow International Film Festival and the 40th Deauville American Film Festival. It was released in Spanish theatres last Friday 12 September 2014 and was the last film completed by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Begoña and I had the chance to see the film, last Monday, 15 September. And, although I’ve not read the book yet, I’m delighted to have seen it. I spent a wonderful time. Highly recommended.

‘It is a very European story and so we were looking for a European director,’ says Gail Egan, one of the film’s producers. ‘We thought Anton’s style and the whole way he saw the story was just so exciting. We had all seen Control and thought it was absolutely brilliant. The American was just about to come out when we first approached Anton.’
Corbijn, who knew the German city of Hamburg well and had directed his very first music video (for Palais Schaumburg) in the city back in 1983, was intrigued by the subject matter. ‘We are dealing with a world that has changed so much since 2001. We judge people very quickly, everything has to be black or white. I feel this is something that is affecting all of our lives,’ he says.
A Most Wanted Man is produced by Potboiler Productions, The Ink Factory and Amusement Park.
Potboiler Productions, headed by Gail Egan and Andrea Calderwood, had previously turned le Carré’s novel The Constant Gardener into a multiple award-winning feature film directed by Fernando Meirelles in 2005. In contrast to the sunshine-infused African setting of the earlier film, this time the producers needed a director who could capture the grey moodiness of contemporary Hamburg, one of the most diverse, vibrant and rich cities in Europe.
The Ink Factory is the production company set up by Simon Cornwell and Stephen Cornwell, the sons of John le Carré (who was born David Cornwell). Los Angeles-based Stephen is also a screenwriter whose credits include the Liam Neeson thriller Unknown. A Most Wanted Man is their debut feature as producers.
Amusement Park, based in Hamburg and Berlin, is headed by Malte Grunert, whose credits include David Mackenzie’s Perfect Sense. Malte joined the production at an early stage and ensured the film retained an authentic German flavour.
With financing from the UK’s Film4, Australian writer Andrew Bovell, best-known for the complex, sophisticated drama Lantana, was asked to write the script. ‘We all had a huge respect for Lantana which really spoke to a lot of the levels of character intrigue and deception we wanted to have,’ says Stephen Cornwell of the choice of Bovell. Lantana also has the same richness of characterisation and storytelling.
‘One of the interesting things about A Most Wanted Man is that it doesn’t really have an antagonist,’ Cornwell continues. ‘It has lots of people who all believe they are doing the right thing but their reasons are all different. They come into conflict around one central objective, which is the most wanted man who they all see from a different perspective and want for different reasons.’

Basada en la novela homónima de John Le Carré, El hombre más buscado es un thriller de espionaje británico, dirigido por Anton Corbijn. El guión fue escrito por Andrew Bovell y está protagonizada por Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright, Daniel Brühl y Nina Hoss. La película se estrenó en el Festival de Cine de Sundance 2014 y compitió en la sección ofical del 36 Festival de Cine Internacional de Moscú y del 40 Festival de Cine Americano de Deauville. Fue estrenada en los cines españoles el pasado viernes 12 de septiembre 2014 y fue la última película terminada por el difunto Philip Seymour Hoffman. Begoña y yo tuvimos la oportunidad de ver la película, el pasado lunes, 15 de septiembre. Y, aunque no he leído el libro todavía, estoy encantado de haberla visto. Pasé un magnífico rato. Muy recomendable.

Juzgamos a la gente muy rápido, todo tiene que ser blanco o negro. Creo que es algo que está afectando a todas nuestras vidas”, asegura.

Potboiler Productions, dirigida por Gail Egan y Andrea Calderwood, ya había convertido en 2005 la novela de le Carré El jardinero fiel en una película ganadora de múltiples galardones dirigida por Fernando Meirelles. En contraste con el soleado entorno africano de esa película, los productores necesitaban esta vez un director que pudiera captar el ambiente gris de la Hamburgo contemporánea, una de las ciudades más diversas, animadas y ricas de Europa.
The Ink Factory es la productora creada por Simon Cornwell y Stephen Cornwell, los hijos de John le Carré (nacido como David Cornwell). Stephen, residente en Los Ángeles es además un guionista cuyos créditos incluyen el thriller de Liam Neeson Sin identidad. El hombre más buscado es su primera película como productores.
Amusement Park, con sede en Hamburgo y Berlín, está dirigida por Malte Grunert, cuyos créditos incluyen la película de David Mackenzie Perfect Sense. Malte se incorporó a la producción en las etapas iniciales y se aseguró de que la película conservara un auténtico sabor alemán.
Una vez asegurada la financiación de la británica Film4, se pidó al guionista australiano Andrew Bovell, especialmente conocido por el complejo y sofisticado drama Lantana, que escribiera el guión. “Todos sentíamos un enorme respeto por Lantana que contaba en buena medida con los niveles de engaños e intrigas entre personajes que buscábamos”, comenta Stephen Cornwell sobre la elección de Bovell. “Lantana también posee esa misma riqueza de caracterización y narración.”
“Uno de los aspectos más interesnates de El hombre más buscado es que no tiene realmente un antagonista,” posigue Cornwell. “Tiene a muchas personas que están todas convencidas de estar haciendo lo correcto, pero sus motivos son diferentes. Entran en conflicto en torno a un objetivo central, que es el hombre más buscado, al que todos ven desde una perspectiva diferente y al que quieren por motivos diferentes.
