The Two Faces of January is a 2014 thriller Franco-British-American written and directed by screenwriter Hossein Amini in his directorial debut. The story was adapted from the homonymous novel by Patricia Highsmith starring Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac. The action is set in Greece and Turkey. The film premiered in February 2014 at the Berlinale Special Gala section of the 64th Berlin International Berlin Film Festival, and was released in Spanish cinemas on Friday 13th June 2014.
During a visit to the Acropolis, a wealthy American Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his young wife Colette (Kirsten Dunst) cross paths with Rydal (Oscar Isaac), a young American who scams tourists working as a tourist guide. They invite him for dinner and he accepts. After dinner Rydal returns to the MacFarlands’ hotel to bring back a bracelet she had forgotten in the taxi they shared. When Rydal arrives he finds Chester helping a man he presumes drunk. In fact, he was accidently killed by Chester. Rydal helps the couple in their flight.
Begoña and I had the chance to see this film some days ago. Patricia Highsmith has been one of my favourite writers and, without any doubt, she has been largely responsible for my fondness of crime fiction. I had not read this book, but I’m told now that it’s one of her worst novels.
After a promising start, I began to lose interest in the film. Maybe on account of some elements that seem to me hard to believe. Why would anyone run away from a hotel leaving behind her/his passport? As from that point the film begins to lose interest in my view.

Las dos caras de enero es un thriller franco-británico-estadounidense del 2014 escrito y dirigido por el guionista Hossein Amini en su primera pelicula como director. La historia es una adaptación de la novela homónima de Patricia Highsmith protagonizada por Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst y Oscar Isaac. La acción se desarrolla en Grecia y Turquía. La película se estrenó en febrero de 2014 en la Gala Especial del 64º Festival de Internacional de Cine de Berlín, y fue estrenada en los cines españoles el viernes 13 de junio del 2014.
Durante una visita a la Acrópolis, un rico americano Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) y su joven esposa Colette (Kirsten Dunst) se cruzan con Rydal (Oscar Isaac), un joven norteamericano que estafa turistas trabajando como guía turístico. Ellos lo invitan a cenar y él acepta. Después de la cena Rydal vuelve al hotel de los MacFarland para devolver un brazalete que ella había olvidado en el taxi que compartían. Cuando Rydal llega se encuentra con Chester ayudando a un hombre que supone borracho. De hecho, fue accidentalmente asesinado por Chester. Rydal ayuda a la pareja en su huida.
Begoña y yo tuvimos la oportunidad de ver esta película hace unos días. Patricia Highsmith ha sido una de mis escritoras favoritas y, sin lugar a dudas, ha sido en gran parte responsable de mi afición a la novela negra. Yo no había leído este libro, pero me han dicho ahora que es una de sus peores novelas.
Después de un comienzo prometedor, empecé a perder interés en la película. Tal vez a causa de algunos elementos que me parecen difíciles de creer. ¿Por qué iba alguien a huir de un hotel dejando atrás su pasaporte? A partir de ese momento la película comienza a perder interés en mi opinión.
