My Film Notes: The Drop (2014) directed by Michaël R. Roskam

The Drop (2014) is an American film (106 min), directed by Michaël R. Roskam from a screenplay written by Dennis Lehane, based on his short story Animal Rescue (2009), later converted into a novella. It stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini, Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz and James Frecheville. The film was screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, and was released in Spain last Friday 26th September, 2014. I went to see it yesterday, Begoña couldn’t make it on this occasion.

Tom Hardy delivers his most accomplished performance to date in the English-language debut from acclaimed Belgian director Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead). Hardy is Bob Saginowski, a Brooklyn bartender who’s as big-hearted as he is streetwise. The bar is Cousin Marv’s, a neighbourhood watering hole that doubles as a drop bar — a place for its owners, some local Chechen gangsters, to launder money.

Bob and Marv walk a thin line between regular life and the underworld — especially Marv (James Gandolfini), a former crime boss now in the pocket of a new and much crueller operation. When the drop is stolen in a holdup, they must weigh the threat of the Chechens against that of a sharp and curious cop (John Ortiz). Bob’s life is further complicated by a chance meeting with a local woman, Nadia (Noomi Rapace), and it isn’t long before his own past returns to haunt him.

Using grey, misty hues and a foreboding atmosphere, Roskam sets a nuanced character study in a world of moral ambiguity. Hardy comprises its centre in a typically heavyweight — if deceptively slow-building — turn, surrounded by a splendid international cast including Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Belgian (and soon-to-be Hollywood) star Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead, Rust and Bone), and Gandolfini in his riveting final performance. Roskam lends a distinctly European sensibility to The Drop‘s very American milieu, allowing the film to move naturally toward a gripping conclusion that will leave hearts racing and minds wondering: just which of these animals truly needs rescuing?

My first thought, after the film, was that it was one of the best premiers of the year. It can be highlighted the brilliant performance of Tom Hardy as Bob Saginowski. The story, excellent and very well told, has the right pace. Despite its bitter realism, I really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

La entrega (2014) es una película americana (106 min), dirigida por Michaël R. Roskam a partir de un guión escrito por Dennis Lehane, basado en su relato Animal Rescue (2009), más tarde convertido en una novela corta. Está protagonizada por Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini, Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz y James Frecheville. La película se proyectó en la sección de Presentaciones Especiales del Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto 2014, y se estrenó en España el pasado viernes 26 de septiembre de 2014. Fui a verla ayer, Begoña no pudo acompañarme en esta ocasión.

Tom Hardy nos ofrece su actuación más lograda hasta la fecha en el debut inglés, del aclamado director belga Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead). Hardy es Bob Saginowski, un camarero de Brooklyn muy espabilado y con gran corazón. El bar se llama Cousin Marv’s, un local de barrio que sus propietarios, unos delincuentes chechenos, utilizan como lugar de entrega para lavar dinero.

Bob y su primo Marv, el antiguo propietario, caminan por la delgada línea que separa la vida normal de los bajos fondos, especialmente Marv (James Gandolfini), un antiguo jefe de una banda criminal ahora a sueldo de una organización nueva mucho más cruel. Cuando en un atraco roban la entrega, deben sopesar la amenaza que representan los chechenos frente a un policía inteligente y curioso (John Ortiz). La vida de Bob se complica aún más por un encuentro casual con una mujer del barrio, Nadia (Noomi Rapace), y en breve su pasado va a regresar para atormentarlo.

Utilizando tonalidades grises, difuminadas y un ambiente angustioso, Roskam desarrolla una trama basada en el estudio de unos personajes en un mundo moralmente ambigüo. Hardy se constituye en el verdadero peso pesado, aunque de manera engañosamente lenta, en torno al cual gira un espléndido reparto internacional que incluye a Rapace (Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres), la estrella belga (y pronto de Hollywood) Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead, Rust and Bone), y a Gandolfini en su fascinante último trabajo. Roskam ofrece una sensibilidad inequivocamente europea al entorno muy americano en el que transcurre La entrega, permitiendo que la acción se mueva con naturalidad hacia un apasionate final que dejará a los corazones latiendo y a las mentes preguntándose: ¿cuál de estos animales es el que realmente necesita ser rescatado? Mi primer pensamiento, después de la película, fue que se trataba de uno de los mejores estrenos del año. Se puede destacar la brillante actuación de Tom Hardy como Bob Saginowski. La historia, excelente y muy bien contada, tiene el ritmo adecuado. A pesar de su amargo realismo, me gustó mucho. Muy recomendable.
