OT: Juan Gil 4 Meses 2013

At this stage, I imagine that regular or sporadic readers of The Game’s Afoot have come to realize that I’m very fond of wines, red and Spanish wines in particular. My intention with these entries is to introduce some affordable Spanish wines at very reasonable prices, generally below the 9 Euros benchmark, except in very exceptional cases. I’m not an expert, I know nothing about wines, I just enjoy drinking a glass of wine during the weekends. But I do like to taste wines from different origins even if my taste is biased towards the Rioja wines. After all, my wife is 100% Riojan, and one of my grandmothers was also from La Rioja.

Today’s wine comes from Murcia, and although I have talked before about the monastrell variety I don’t want to ignore this particular wine, that has a superb value for money in my view.

DSCN6576 The Gil family have been major producers in Jumilla since the early 20th century but took a major step forward when Miguel Gil, great-grandson of the company’s founder, built a new bodega in time for the 2003 vintage. Situated on the slopes of the Peñarubia mountain, the highest part of Jumilla with poor stony soils noted for its richly flavoured, concentrated Monastrell, the bodega owns about 400 hectares of  vineyards and has access to further fruit from 30 to 50 year old vines. Bodegas Juan Gil is dedicated to producing powerful yet approachable and modern wines, mainly based on Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) which is grown on about 85% of the vineyard – other varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Produced from organically grown vines – on the slopes of the Peñarubia mountain in Jumilla. The grapes are handpicked, and the maceration lasted 15 days, with temperature maintained below 28 degrees. The wine was macerated with the skins before being deposited in stainless steel tanks where malolactic fermentation took place. Aged in French and American oak for around 4 months.
