Book description: September 1995. Veum is in his office when a telephone conversation takes him back 25 years, to a case he was involved in while working as a child protection officer, in the summer of 1970. A small boy was separated from his mother under tragic circumstances. But that was not the end of it. In 1974 the same boy surfaced in connection with a sudden death in his new home. And again ten years later, in connection with a dramatic double-murder in Sunnfjord. The boy is now an adult, on the run in Oslo, determined to take revenge on those responsible for destroying his life, among them the former child protection officer, now detective Veum.
Gunnar Staalesen was born in Bergen, Norway in 1947. He made his debut at the early age of twenty-two with Seasons of Innocence. In 1977 he published the first book in the Varg Veum series. They are immensely popular and have been translated into twelve languages including French, German, Dutch, Italian and Russian. Gunnar Staalesen has twice won Norway’s top crime prize, the Golden Pistol. Cold Hearts, Yours Until Death, The Consorts of Death, and The Writing on the Wall are all published in English by Arcadia Books. The next instalments in the Varg Veum series – We Shall Inherit the Wind, Where Roses Never Die and No One Is So Safe in Danger – will be published by Orenda Books in 2015, 2016 and 2017. If my information is correct The Consorts of Death is the fifteenth instalment in the series, and given that the story goes back several years ago, it might be a good starting point to begin reading this series. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I can strongly recommend it. I found the plot highly interesting, the writing is quite superb and the translation by Don Bartlett has seemed to me unparalleled. And, as usual in Staalesen, the book tackles some social issues with great courage. For a complete list of the books in the Varg Veum series see my previous post here.
You can find more information about Var Veum TV series here, and according to Orenda Books a brand-new Varg Veum series (10 episodes) is being made for TV! The 60-million-krone series will start filming in Bergen in 2016/17, and air in 2018, with worldwide distribution. Once again, the extraordinary Trond Espen Seim will play the role of private investigator Varg Veum.

He disfrutado mucho leyendo este libro y lo recomiendo encarecidamente. Me pareció muy interesante la trama, la escritura es bastante excepcional y la traducción de Don Bartlett me ha parecido inigualable.
