OT: Luis Cañas Crianza 2010 DOC Rioja

  • 20150714_115504 Winery: Bodegas Luis Cañas, Ctra. Samaniego nº 10, 01307 Villabuena (Álava) España. Bodegas Luis Cañas is a family-owned winery that dates back to 1928, although the family has been in the grape-growing and winemaking business for more than two centuries. In 1989, Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, took the reins of the winery and in 1994 built a new winery equipped with the most modern processing systems which would enable a qualitative leap in the production of their wines. They began to add selection criteria to the grapes in their vineyards and later tables for bunch selection. Juan Luis´ perfectionist and meticulous character meant that Bodegas Luis Cañas are always searching for ways to improve the production of its wines by making constant improvements and additions to the winery.

Wine Advocate #218 – April 2015 – Luis Gutierrez: 91 pts“The 2012 Crianza is quite classical, with minty/herbal notes of American oak and ripe berries. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a pleasant, long finish. Year after year this is a reference in the Crianzas, and a very good value.”

By the way Crianza wines are at least in their third year, having spent a minimum of one year in casks. (For white wines, the minimum cask ageing period is 6 months) to meet the standards set by the Regulatory Council of the Qualified Denomination of Origin Rioja.
