I seem to remember that Marta, in her excellent blog Leer sin Prisa (in Spanish), was the one who first discovered me the existence of this short story, considered by many the first hard-boiled in the development of crime fiction. In fact The False Burton Combs written by Carroll John Daly was published in the Black Mask Magazine in December 1922, therefore predating the first appearance of Dashiell Hammett’s the Continental Op in October 1923. The advertising of the publisher, Les éditions de Londres, referring to this short story, considers that it is a must-read story for anyone interested in the genesis of hard-boiled, or in crime stories. A statement that, in my view, is fairly overstated. But anyway I do believe that one can notice some elements that will be considered, later on, critical in the description of hard-boiled fiction. As we can read in Lecture: The Hard-Boiled Tradition in Crime Fiction:
There are four essential defining characteristics of the hard-boiled tradition. One is its portrayal of the world as a somewhat sleazy amoral twilight zone in which good and evil are indistinguishable. A second is in its use of racy dialogue, contemporary slang often originating in the underworld and ghetto, mixed with the wise-crack. Third, there is the emphasis upon the detective as a lone avenger. Finally, there is an emphasis on macho action and explicit — often random — violence in place of social description and character. All four characteristics are in my view essential to the genre …
If I may offer a piece of advice, please do not read the summary plot in the web site of the publishing house, to avoid spoilers. I myself prefer not to mention a word about the plot, not to ruin the reading to any interested reader. But I would rather suggest the reading of: Historical context predating “The false Burton Combs” here.
Finally, I would like to add that I don’t quite understand why The False Burton Combs has been published individually, given its few pages. It would have been a great opportunity to collect in one book several of his short stories.
Born in Yonkers in 1899, Carroll John Daly belongs to the category of writers who have found their inspiration in the lives of others rather than in his own. Daly was a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Apparently he was never an actor, and he did work at a New Jersey theatre. In the 1920s, already married, he settled in White Plains, New York, and started his writing career, thanks to the financial backing of his uncle. In December 1922 he published The False Burton Combs in the famous Black Mask magazine. Preceding Dashiell Hammett’s Continental Op by only a few months, most crime writing scholars agree his story is the first ever hard-boiled novel. In April 1923, he writes Three-gun Terry, published in Black Mask, which features Terry Mack, a slightly more developed character and an evolution on the anonymous narrator of The False Burton Combs. Then in June 1923, he writes Knights of the Open Palm, introducing his most famous character, a private eye named Race Williams, himself an evolution on Terry Mack and the anonymous narrator of The False Burton Combs. Me parece recordar que Marta, en su excelente blog Leer sin Prisa (en español), fue quien primero me descubrió la existencia de este relato breve, considerado por muchos el primer relato hard-boiled en la historia de la novela negra. De hecho El falso Burton Combs escrito por Carroll John Daly fue publicado en la Revista Black Mask en diciembre de 1922, es por tanto anterior a la primera aparición del agente de la Cotinental de Dashiell Hammett en octubre de 1923. La publicidad de la editorial, Les éditions de Londres, en referencia a este relato corto, considera que es de lectura obligada para cualquier persona interesada en la génesis de la ficción hard-boiled o de la novela policíaca. Una afrimación que, en mi opinión, es bastante exagerada. Pero de todos modos yo creo que se pueden observar algunos elementos que serán considerados, más tarde, fundamentales en el desarrollo de la ficción hard-boiled.
