Maigret at the Coroner’s is the thirty-two book in Maigret Mysteries series. The story was written between the 21st and the 30th of July 1949 and this is the second and the last time that Simenon located Maigret in an American setting, more concretely in Tucson, Arizona. The first one was in the novel Maigret in New York (see my review here), which he wrote in March 1946. In the latter novel, Maigret having retired from the police force, travels to New York from his home in France in order to solve a case in a private capacity. In Maigret at the Coroner’s, he is still a member of the Police Judiciaire in Paris and is in America on a ‘study tour’ as it is officially called, ‘to learn about American methods’.
Maigret is attending an inquest held by a coroner wearing neither jacket nor waistcoat yet looking as grave and well mannered as a bank clerk. In truth he was perfectly aware that his colleague, Agent Cole of the FBI, had delicately got rid of him, but Maigret could not manage to feel offended: he would have done the same in the other’s man place. In fact he had done the same just two years ago when chaperoning his colleague Mr Pyke, of Scotland Yard. (See: My Friend Maigret) The next day Cole will take him to the Mexican border to show him Nogales, a border town, straddling both countries, point of entry, of the largest amount of marijuana, into the United States.
Maigret knew nothing about the matter. Five young men in uniform from the Air Force, were sitting in the dock, though he wasn’t exactly sure whether they were the defendants or the witnesses. As the story unfolds, Maigret becomes more interested in the case. Apparently, all of them went out together with a young girl, Bessie Mitchell, one night. After heavy drinking, they drove towards Nogales, but they didn’t manage to get there. The morning after, Bessie’s body appeared run over by a train over the tracks. The coroner’s inquest must determine if it could have been an accident, a suicide, or a murder case.
As almost always, this new entry in Maigret’s Mysteries series, has been very entertaining. The story is full of amusing comments about the American way of life from an European point of view. It also shows us how we can reach to the same conclusions, by different methods, and, most important, the in-depth knowledge that Maigret has of psychology and of human character. A relatively brief story which is also one of the few courtroom dramas, if not the only one, in this series.

Maigret en los dominios del coroner es el libro de treinta y dos en la serie los misterios de Maigret. Fue escrito entre el 21 y el 30 de julio de 1949, y esta es la segunda y la última vez que Simenon sitúa a Maigret en los Estados Unidos, más concretamente en Tucson, Arizona. La primera fue en la novela Maigret en Nueva York (ver mi reseña aquí), que escribió en marzo de 1946. En esta última novela, Maigret después de haberse retirado de la policía, viaja a Nueva York desde su casa en Francia con el fin de resolver un caso a título privado. En Maigret en los dominios del coroner, contínua siendo miembro de la Policía Judicial de París y está en América en un “viaje de estudios”, como se le denomina oficialmente, “para conocer de cerca los métodos americanos”.
Maigret está asistiendo a una investigación realizada por un coroner (un funcionario judicial) que no llevaba chaqueta ni chaleco sin embargo, parece tan serio y bien educado como un empleado de banco. En verdad él era perfectamente consciente de que su colega, el agente del FBI Cole, delicadamente se había librado de él, pero Maigret no podía sentirse ofendido: él habría hecho lo mismo en su lugar. De hecho, él había hecho lo mismo hace tan sólo dos años, cuando estaba acompañando a su colega el Sr. Pyke, de Scotland Yard. (Ver: Mi amigo Maigret) Al día siguiente, Cole lo llevará a la frontera con México para mostrarle Nogales, una ciudad fronteriza, a caballo entre los dos países, punto de entrada, de la mayor cantidad de marihuana, en los Estados Unidos.
Maigret no sabía nada sobre el asunto. Cinco jóvenes en uniforme de la Fuerza Aérea, estaban sentados en el banquillo, aunque no estaba muy seguro de si eran los acusados o los testigos. A medida que se desarrolla la historia, Maigret se vuelve más interesado en el caso. Al parecer, todos ellos salieron junto con una joven, Bessie Mitchell, una noche. Después de beber en exceso, se dirigieron hacia Nogales, pero no lograron llegar. A la mañana siguiente, el cuerpo de Bessie apareció atropellado por un tren sobre las vías. la investigación oficial debe determinar si podría haber sido un accidente, un suicidio o un caso de asesinato.
Como casi siempre, esta nueva entrada de la serie los misterios de Maigret, ha sido muy entretenida. La historia está llena de divertidos comentarios acerca de la forma de vida americana desde un punto de vista europeo. También nos muestra cómo podemos llegar a las mismas conclusiones, por diferentes métodos, y, lo más importante, el conocimiento profundo que tiene Maigret de la psicología y del carácter humano. Una historia relativamente breve, que es también uno de los pocos dramas legales, si no el único, en esta serie.
Mi valoración: A (Me encantó)
La fugura del córoner no existe en nuestro sistema judicial que yo sepa. La traducción de médico forense, no siempre es correcta. Aunque el cargo que desempeñan es judicial, y con frecuencia se requieren cualificaciones y experiencia jurídicas, los córoners no son considerados miembros de la judicatura. Sin embargo, en algunas inevestigaciones de gran repercusión mediática un juez puede ser designado para supervisar las actuaciones como adjunto al córoner. La función de córoner se estableció formalmente en 1194, originalmente como una forma de recaudador impuestos. Con el paso de los siglos, su papel ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en un oficial judicial independiente, encargado de la investigación de muertes súbitas, violentas o por causas no naturales.
