Synopsis: Six weeks before she is due to take up her position as the first female head of MI6, Amelia Levene vanishes without a trace. Her disappearance is the gravest crisis MI6 has faced for more than a decade. There has been no ransom demand, no word from foreign intelligence services, no hint of a defection. Should news of Levene’s disappearance leak out, the consequences would be catastrophic.  But for disgraced MI6 officer Thomas Kell, the crisis offers a chance for redemption.  He is approached by his former employers and ordered to find her. Kell’s search takes him first to France, then North Africa, where he discovers an extraordinary secret hidden deep in Levene’s past.  It is a secret that could fatally compromise Britain’s national security – and for which Kell himself could pay with his life.

My take: I have always enjoyed the spy books by Graham Greene and John Le Carré and, more recently, I have developed a certain taste for all kind of spy thrillers. Thus, it is no surprise that at a certain moment I was going to find Charles Cumming’s novels. A Foreign Country is the first one of his books I read. My expectations were much too high and, for this reason, I’m a bit disappointed with the final outcome. But let’s go one step at a time. I regret to say that the premise on which the story is based is highly unlikely. Furthermore, the story makes an excessive use of all sort of stereotypes and is too formulaic. Everything is extremely predictable and it turns out unnatural, and the characterization is poor in my view. But it is not all negative. It works as light entertainment, is easy to read and is well written. I’m confident that the two subsequent books in the series will be much better. I just wonder why it was awarded with the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger in 2012 for Best Thriller of the Year.

A Foreign Country, Cumming’s sixth novel, was published in 2012. It is the first in a trilogy of novels about disgraced MI6 officer Thomas Kell. The novel is now being developed into a television series starring Colin Firth. A Foreign Country was named the first Scottish Crime Book of the Year at the inaugural Bloody Scotland Festival in Stirling in September 2012. A Foreign Country also won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for the best thriller of 2012. A sequel, entitled A Colder War, in which Kell investigates a traitor inside western intelligence, was published in 2014. A Colder War was picked as a 2015 Spring Read by the Richard and Judy book club. The novel also won the CrimeFest eDunnit Award for Best Crime eBook of the Year. The third novel in the Thomas Kell series, A Divided Spy, has been published in June 2016. Cumming’s novels have been translated into fourteen languages. His work is published in the United Kingdom by Harper Collins and in the United States by St Martin’s Press.

Mi opinión: Siempre he disfrutado de los libros de espionaje de Graham Greene y de John Le Carré y, más recientemente, he desarrollado un cierto gusto por todo tipo de novelas de espionaje. Por lo tanto, no es de extrañar que en un determinado momento me fuera a encontrar las novelas de Charles Cumming. A Foreign Country es el primero de sus libros que leo. Mis expectativas eran demasiado altas y, por esta razón, estoy un poco decepcionado con el resultado final. Pero vamos a ir pasao a paso. Lamento decir que la premisa en que se basa la historia es muy poco probable. Por otra parte, la historia hace un uso excesivo de todo tipo de estereotipos y es demasiado formulista. Todo es muy predecible y resulta poco natural, y la caracterización es pobre en mi opinión. Pero no todo es negativo. Funciona como entretenimiento ligero, es fácil de leer y está bien escrita. Estoy seguro de que los dos libros posteriores de la serie serán mucho mejores. Me pregunto por qué fue galardonada con la Steel Dagger Ian Fleming de la CWA en el 2012 a la mejor novela de misterio del año.

Mi valoración: C (Me ha gustado mucho con algunas reservas)

A Foreign Country, la sexta novela de Cumming, fue publicada en el 2012. Es la primera de una trilogía de novelas sobre el desacreditado agente del MI6 Thomas Kell. La novela está próxima a convertirse en una serie de televisión protagonizada por Colin Firth.A Foreign Country fue galardonado con el primer premio al libro de misterio escocés del Año en el festival inaugural  Bloody Scotland en Stirling, en septiembre de 2012.A Foreign Country también ganó la Steel Dagger Ian Fleming de la CWA en el 2012 a la mejor novela de misterio del año. Su secuela, titulada A Colder War, en la que Kell investiga a un traidor dentro de los servicios de inteligencia occidentales, fue publicada en 2014. A Colder War fue elegida lectura de primavera en el 2015 Lee por el club del libro Richard y Judy. La novela también ganó el premio a la mejor novela de misterio en soporte electrónico del año en el CrimeFest. La tercera novela de la serie Thomas Kell, A Divided Spy, acaba de publicarse en junio de este año. Las novelas de Cumming se han traducido a catorce idiomas. Su trabajo está sienod publicado en el Reino Unido por Harper Collins y en los Estados Unidos por St Martin’s Press.
