My take: A Hero in France (apa A Hero of France in the US) is the fourteenth novel in the Night Soldiers series, if we might use the term to describe a set of standalone espionage thrillers whose common denominator is that they all take place in Europe in the years between 1933 and 1942. More specifically, A Hero in France tells the story of a Resistance Cell in a five month period which begins in March 1941, just nine months after the German occupation. The heroes of the story, headed by a man who calls himself Mathieu and whose real identity will only be known at the end of the book, risk their lives to rescue UK aviators who have been shot down and lead them back home, mainly through the Spanish border. It involves a motley crew of characters which include, among others, an Anthropology professor; a former arms dealer, now turned into a nightclub owner who finances their operations; an aristocratic woman who escorts the airmen on their journey up to a secure location; a young female student, who acts as courier around Paris; a cafe’s owner, etc. One other main character is Mattieu’s girlfriend; to whom he hides his true role, for her own security. And lastly, there’s also a bunch of shady characters such as a Croatian conman; a young man called the Spider, and last but not least a German policeman who has just arrive with express orders to dismantling the clandestine escape networks of the French resistance.

I’ve only read so far one book by Alan Furst. My review of The Foreign Correspondent is here. And I should begin by saying that I enjoy reading historical espionage thrillers. My favourites are mainly those whose action unfolds on the years previous and subsequent to the Second World War. Besides, A Hero in France is a very appealing book which offers much food for thought. It has also seemed to me it’s well documented. However, the book structure doesn’t work all that well in my view, I’ve found the story excessively fragmented and its conclusion is somewhat abrupt. In any case, I look forward to reading more books in the series. I’ve excellent references from some of them. .

About the author: Alan Furst is widely recognised as the master of the historical spy novel. Now translated into eighteen languages, he is the author of fourteen novels including Midnight in Europe, Spies of the Balkans – a TV Book Club choice – The Spies of Warsaw, which became a BBC mini-series starring David Tennant and The Foreign Correspondent. Born in New York, he lived for many years in Paris, and now lives on Long Island.

Mi opinión: Un héroe en Francia (publicado en los EE UU como Un héroe de Francia) es la décimocuarta novela en la serie Soldados de la Noche, si podemos usar el término para describir un conjunto independiente de novelas de misterio de espionaje cuyo denominador común es que todas ellas tienen lugar en Europa entre los años 1933 y 1942. Más específicamente, Un héroe en Francia cuenta la historia de una célula de la resistencia en un período de cinco meses que comienza en marzo de 1941, apenas nueve meses después de la ocupación alemana. Los protagonistas de la historia, encabezados por un hombre que se hace llamar Mathieu y cuya verdadera identidad sólo se conocerá al final del libro, arriesgan su vida para rescatar a los aviadores británicos que han sido derribados y llevarlos de vuelta a casa, principalmente a través de la frontera española. Se trata de un grupo heterogéneo de personajes que incluyen, entre otros a un catedrático de Antropología; a un ex traficante de armas, ahora convertido en el propietario de un club nocturno que financia sus operaciones; una aristócrata que acompaña a los aviadores en su viaje hasta un lugar seguro; una joven estudiante, que actúa como mensajera por París; al propietario de un café, etc. Otro personaje principal es la novia de Mattieu; a quien le oculta su verdadero papel, por su propia seguridad. Y por último, también hay un montón de personajes oscuros, como un estafador de Croacia; un joven llamado Spyder y, por último pero no por ello menos importante, un policía alemán que acaba de llegar con órdenes expresas de desmantelar las redes de evacuación clandestino de la resistencia francesa.

Sólo he leído hasta ahora un libro de Alan Furst. Mi reseña de El corresponsal está aquí. Y debería comenzar diciendo que me gusta leer novelas hiostóricas de suspense y de espionaje. Mis favoritas son principalmente aquellas cuya acción se desarrolla en los años anteriores y posteriores a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Además, Un héroe en Francia es un libro muy atractivo que ofrece mucho material para reflexionar. También me ha parecido que está bien documentado. Sin embargo, la estructura del libro no funciona del todo bien en mi opinión, he encontrado la historia excesivamente fragmentada y su conclusión es un tanto brusca. En cualquier caso, estoy deseando leer más libros de esta serie. Tengo excelentes referencias de algunos de ellos.
