This was book 1 in my #20BooksofSummer 2018 reading challenge.

My take: In this last instalment, for the time being, in the series, the reader finds that Harry Bosch continues to work for the San Fernando Police Department, mainly in charge of reviewing cold cases. But one day, following a double murder at a local pharmacy, Bosch turns out being the most senior investigator at the crime scene. And, either because he feels a special sympathy towards one of the victims, or because of longing of his years on duty, Bosch decides to get involved to the full in the investigation. Almost simultaneously, Bosch has to defend himself from the accusation of having fabricated the false evidences that brought a man to remain unfairly on the death row for nearly thirty years, and to clear his good name  at the same time. Given the extremely difficult position of his situation, Bosch has no other option than turning to his half brother, Mickey Haller, requesting his assistance.

I am very pleased to find Michael Connelly, once again, on top of his trade, despite the fact that twenty five years have already passed since Harry Bosch first appearance, in this instalment that, if I’m not mistaken, makes number twenty in the series.  Connelly’s ability to hold the reader’s attention is second to none and, by itself, is able to conceal any minor shortcoming we may glimpse in the plot development. I have certainly very much enjoyed reading this book and I only have words of thanks to the author for making us spending such a good time. Fortunately we won’t have to wait much for reading a new book in the series and coming next October, if my information is right, we will find LAPD Detective Renée Ballard teaming up with Harry Bosch in Dark Sacred Night, a new thriller by Michael Connelly. Just a couple of snippets, to whet your appetite:

Bosch had gotten his detective’s badge in 1977 and spent five years working in various divisions and crime units before he was promoted to homicide detective and posted first at Hollywood Division and then eventually the elite Robbery-Homicide Division working out of Parker Center, downtown. At RHD he was paired with Sheehan, and the Skyler case was one of the first murders they handled as lead investigators. Danielle Skyler’s story was the universal story of Los Angeles, with an added irony of origin. Raised by a single mother who worked as a motel maid in Hollywood, Florida, she filled the holes in her life with applause that came with success in beauty pageants and on the high school stage. Armed with her beauty and fragile confidence, she crossed the three thousand miles from Hollywood to Hollywood at age twenty. She found, as most do, that there was one of her from every small town in America. The paying jobs were few and she was often taken advantage of by the leeches who were part of the entertainment industry. Buts she persevered. She awaited on tables, took acting classes, and went to an endless string of auditions for parts that usually didn’t have character names or many lines.

He knew there were two kinds of truth in this world. The truth that was the unalterable bedrock of one’s life and mission. And the other, malleable truth of politicians, charlatans, corrupt lawyers, and their clients, bent and molded to serve whatever purpose was at hand.

My rating: A+ (Don’t delay, get your hands on a copy of this book)

Mi opinión: En esta última entrega, por el momento, en la serie, el lector descubre que Harry Bosch continúa trabajando para el Departamento de Policía de San Fernando, principalmente a cargo de la revisión de casos abiertos. Pero un día, después de un doble asesinato en una farmacia local, Bosch resulta ser el investigador más experimentado en la escena del crimen. Y, ya sea porque siente una simpatía especial hacia una de las víctimas, o por añoranza de sus años de servicio, Bosch decide involucrarse plenamente en la investigación. Casi simultáneamente, Bosch tiene que defenderse de la acusación de haber fabricado pruebas falsas que llevaron a un hombre a permanecer injustamente en el corredor de la muerte durante casi treinta años, y de limpiar su buen nombre al mismo tiempo. Dada la posición extremadamente difícil de su situación, Bosch no tiene otra opción que recurrir a su medio hermano, Mickey Haller, solicitando su ayuda.

Estoy muy contento de encontrar a Michael Connelly, una vez más, en la cima de su oficio, a pesar del hecho de que ya han pasado veinticinco años desde la primera aparición de Harry Bosch, en esta entrega que, si no me equivoco, hace la número veinte en la serie. La capacidad de Connelly para mantener la atención del lector es insuperable y, por sí misma, es capaz de ocultar cualquier deficiencia menor que podamos vislumbrar en el desarrollo de la trama. Ciertamente he disfrutado mucho leyendo este libro y solo tengo palabras de agradecimiento al autor por hacernos pasar un buen rato. Afortunadamente no tendremos que esperar mucho para leer un nuevo libro en la serie y el próximo octubre, si mi información es correcta, encontraremos a la detective de LAPD Renée Ballard formando equipo con Harry Bosch en Dark Sacred Night, un nuevo thriller de Michael Connelly. Solo un par de fragmentos para despertar su apetito:
