My Take: A note from the author at the beginning warns us that, although arranged chronologically, this book can be read in any way we choose – whether from cover to cover, or by dipping into the sections that we want to find out more about (or even skipping the sections we may be less interested in). In any case this is a timely book which has come to light to celebrate the centenary of the publication of the first book featuring Hercule Poirot, The Mysterious Affair at Styles in 1920. A book that, as the advertising of the editorial says, will delight both to the new readers as those already familiar with Poirot’s canon.
A quick glance to the table of contents can serve us to anticipate what we are going to find. The book is comprised of eight chapters, apart from the author’s note, foreword, introduction, epilogue, key names, endnotes, selected bibliography, index and acknowledgements. Each chapter covers a decade in the life of Poirot, spanning novels, short stories collections, radio and stage plays, films, tv shows, etc. The 1920s; The 1930s, … and so on, until 2020. The author examines the books published in each decade, provides us a spoiler-free brief summary of each one, an account of how and when was issued, along with some of the reviews received at that time. We all know the last Agatha Christie’s novel featuring Poirot, was published in 1975, but the story continues with radio and television broadcasts, and films for the big screen; without forgetting to mention, comics, video games, and Sophie Hannah’s books.
All in all, an entertaining book easy to read, thanks to a straightforward style far from an excessive academicism, that turns out pleasant to read and that can be very helpful also as a reference book.

About the Author: Dr Mark Aldridge is a senior lecturer in film and television, at Solent University, Southampton, UK. His research interests include film and television history, and the work of Agatha Christie. He completed his PhD at the University of Southampton, with a thesis that explored attitudes towards early British television. His publications include the books Agatha Christie on Screen (2016) and The Birth of British Television (2011). Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Greatest Detective in the World published in 2020 by HarperCollins is his latest book.
Mark Gatiss is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, director, producer and novelist. His work includes writing for and acting in the TV series Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Dracula. Together with Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Jeremy Dyson, he is a member of the comedy team The League of Gentlemen. He played Tycho Nestoris in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Mi opinión: Una nota del autor al principio nos advierte que, aunque esté ordenado cronológicamente, este libro se puede leer de la forma que elijamos, ya sea de principio a fin o sumergiéndonos en las secciones sobre las que queremos obtener más información. (o incluso saltearse las secciones que nos pueden interesar menos). En cualquier caso se trata de un libro oportuno que ha salido a la luz para celebrar el centenario de la publicación del primer libro protagonizado por Hercule Poirot, The Mysterious Affair at Styles en 1920. Un libro que, como dice la publicidad de la editorial, hará las delicias tanto de los nuevos lectores como de los ya familiarizados con el canon de Poirot.
Un rápido vistazo al índice nos puede servir para anticiparnos a lo que nos vamos a encontrar. El libro consta de ocho capítulos, además de una nota del autor, prólogo, introducción, epílogo, nombres clave, notas finales, bibliografía seleccionada, índice y agradecimientos. Cada capítulo cubre una década en la vida de Poirot, abarcando novelas, colecciones de cuentos, obras de radio y de teatro, películas, programas de televisión, etc. La década de 1920; Década de 1930,… y así hasta 2020. El autor examina los libros publicados en cada década, nos proporciona un breve resumen sin spoilers de cada uno, un relato de cómo y cuándo se publicó, junto con algunas de las reseñas recibidas en ese momento. Todos sabemos que la última novela de Agatha Christie protagonizada por Poirot, fue publicada en 1975, pero la historia continúa con las retransmisiones de radio, televisión y películas para la gran pantalla; sin olvidar los cómics, los videojuegos y los libros de Sophie Hannah.
En definitiva, un libro entretenido y de fácil lectura, gracias a un estilo sencillo, lejos de un academicismo excesivo, que resulta agradable de leer y que puede resultar muy útil también como libro de referencia.
