Poe first published the story in the May 1842 edition of Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine as “The Mask of the Red Death”, with the tagline “A Fantasy”. A revised version was published in the July 19, 1845 edition of the Broadway Journal under the now-standard title “The Masque of the Red Death”. The original title emphasized the figure at the end of the story; the new title puts emphasis on the masquerade ball. The story is in the public domain and it is available at Project Gutenberg.
Summary: “The Masque of the Red Death” (originally published as “The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy”) is a story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1842. The story follows Prince Prospero’s attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ball in seven rooms of the abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms.
My Take: My interest in this short story will be better understood when I publish my notes on the book I am currently reading. In any case, I hesitated between reading it first or afterwards, but I finally decided to read it before. It is a short reading and it was published much earlier. For these reasons I thought it could give me some clues to better understand the novel I have in hand. In any case this is an interesting story on its own rights. It is subject to several interpretations and I’m sure it will delight to anyone who reads it. A small gem.
About the author: Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters, a genius who was tragically misunderstood in his lifetime. He was a seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, and exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and Charles Baudelaire, who championed him long before Poe was appreciated in his own country. Baudelaire’s enthusiasm brought Poe a wide audience in Europe, and his writing came to have enormous importance for modern French literature. (Source: Fantastic Fiction). The Mystery Writers of America have named their awards for excellence in the genre the “Edgars.”

El relato narra los intentos del príncipe Próspero de evitar una plaga peligrosa, conocida como la Muerte Roja, escondiéndose en su abadía. Él, junto con muchos otros nobles acomodados, organiza un baile de máscaras en siete salas de la abadía, cada una decorada con un color diferente. En medio de su juerga, una figura misteriosa disfrazada de víctima de la Muerte Roja entra y se abre paso por cada una de las habitaciones.
Mi opinión: Mi interés en este relato breve se entenderá mejor cuando publique mis notas sobre el libro que estoy leyendo actualmente. En cualquier caso, dudé entre leerlo primero o después, pero finalmente me decidí a leerlo antes. Es una lectura breve y se publicó mucho antes. Por estas razones pensé que podría darme algunas pistas para entender mejor la novela que tengo entre manos. En cualquier caso, esta es una historia interesante por derecho propio. Está sujeta a varias interpretaciones y estoy seguro que hará las delicias de cualquiera que la lea. Una pequeña joya.
