The action takes place in the neighbourhood of Red Hook in Brooklyn. ‘Red Hook is a mile-long spit stranded at the southern point of Brooklyn where the East River opens into the bay. In the middle of the neigborhood sits Coffey Park, which splits the “front” with its decaying waterfront from the fortress of housing projects and low-cost supermarkets at the “back”.’
The story opens on a hot summer night when, to beat boredom (the first sentence reads: Summer is everybody else’s party), two fifteen-year-old girls decide to do something foolish and wild: take a ride on a pink rubber raft onto the waters of the nearby bay. Their names Val (Valerie) Marino and June Giatto. Only Val survives. Washed ashore by the current, she is found unconscious the next morning by Jonathan Sprouse, a music teacher at St. Bernadette’s, the school at which the two girls attend. Jonathan had been drinking seriously the night before but somehow he manages to carry her up to a nearby bodega (a grocery store) run by a Lebanese called Fadi. Fadi relies on the economic recovery of Red Hook, especially with the first cruise ship, the Queen Mary, set to dock at the terminal at the end of Visitation in two months. He also believes that his store is a place for neighbourhood news. A while back, he started a weekly community newsletter that he presses into his customers’ hands along with their change.
Both girls were seen together for the last time by an eighteen-year-old, Cree (Acretius) James, a kid from the projects who used to hang with Rita, Val’s older sister before her parents taught her that kids from the Houses were off-limits to waterside girls. Val has no recollection of what happened after she fell into the river and doesn’t know where June is. The police believes Cree is somehow involved in this tragic event. Not quite knowing where he comes from, another young man, Ren (Renton) Davis aka RunDown, is determined to help Cree who is just beginning to overcome the murder of his father Marcus, a corrections officer, shot dead by a bullet meant from no one in particular during an old drug war, currently dormant. As the story unfolds the reader will come across other members of Cree’s family, his mother Gloria, grandma Lucy Wallace, his aunt Celia and cousin Monique (Mo), who has inherited Gloria’s gift.
Even at the risk of repeating what others have said I would like to highlight that the story is populated by highly convincing characters like Val, Jonathan, Cree, Ren, Fadi and Mo, all of them superbly portrayed. Among them the neighbourhood of Red Hook stands out as another interesting character in itself. The plot, excellent and very well told, has a nice pace, and the dialogues turn out credible and realistic. A highly emotional story, without falling into sentimentalities, that has a strong sense of place and illustrates us about the social reality of the area. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the reading. A real gem. I very much look forward to her next novel.

A former professional squash player, she now lives in Los Angeles with her husband, filmmaker and screenwriter Justin Nowell. Her first novel, The Art of Disappearing, was published in 2009. Visitation Street (2013) is her second novel and was chosen by Dennis Lehane for his eponymous imprint.

La acción tiene lugar en la comunidad de Red Hook en Brooklyn. “Red Hook es una franja de una milla de largo encallada en el extremo sur de Brooklyn, donde el río Este se abre a la bahía. Sus nombres Val (Valerie) Marino y June Giatto. Sólo Val sobrevive. Arrastrada hasta la orilla por la corriente, es encontrada inconsciente a la mañana siguiente por Jonathan Sprouse, un profesor de música en St. Bernadette, la escuela a la que asisten las dos muchachas. Jonathan había estado bebiendo en serio la noche anterior pero de alguna manera se las arregla para llevarla en brazos hasta una tienda de comestibles cercana, de un libanés llamado Fadi. Fadi confia en la recuperación económica de Red Hook, especialmente con el primer crucero, el Queen Mary, previsto para atracar en la terminal en el final de Visitación dentro de dos meses. También cree que su tienda es un lugar apropiado para difundir las noticias locales. Hace un tiempo, comenzó a editar un boletín semanal de la comunidad que entrega en mano a sus clientes, junto con el cambio.
Ambas muchachas fueron vistas juntas por última vez por un joven de dieciocho años de edad, Cree (Acretius) James, un chico de las viviendas baratas que solían salir con Rita, la hermana mayor de Val antes de que sus padres le enseñaran que los muchachos de las viviendas baratas les estaban prohibidos a las niñas que vivian en la zona de la costa. Val no tiene ningún recuerdo de lo que sucedió después de que ella cayera al río y no sabe dónde puede estar June. La policía piensa que Cree está involucrado de alguna manera en este trágico suceso. Sin saber de dónde viene, otro joven, Ren (Renton) Davis alias RunDown, está decidido a ayudar a Cree que está empezando a superar la muerte de su padre Marcus, un agente penitenciario, muerto a tiros por una bala perdida durante una antigua guerra de drogas, actualmente inactiva. A medida que la historia se desarrolla el lector se encontrará con otros miembros de la familia de Cree, su madre Gloria, la abuela Lucy Wallace, su tía Celia y la prima Monique (Mo), que ha heredado el don de Gloria.
Aun a riesgo de repetir lo que otros han dicho me gustaría destacar que la historia está poblada por personajes muy convincentes como Val, Jonathan, Cree, Ren, Fadi y Mo, todos ellos magníficamente retratados. Entre ellos el barrio de Red Hook destaca como otro personaje interesante en sí mismo. La trama, excelente y muy bien contada, tiene un buen ritmo, y los diálogos resultan creíbles y realistas. Una historia muy emotiva, sin caer en sentimentalismos, que tiene un fuerte sentido del lugar y nos ilustra sobre la realidad social de la zona. He disfrutado muchísimo de la lectura. Una verdadera joya. Espero con impaciencia su próxima novela.
