The Burning Soul is the tenth book in Charlie Parker’s series by Irish author John Connolly. The main character is a former NYPD detective turned private investigator after the violent murder of his wife and daughter. Occasionally he is haunted by their ghosts, real or imagined. The action, as in most of the books in this series, is set in Maine (USA). The book opens when Anna Kore, a fourteen-year-old girl at Pastor’s Bay, Maine, has gone missing.
A man who calls himself Randall Haight has received some anonymous threats. This has not been always his name. As a child he killed a fourteen-year-old girl and, after serving his sentence, he received a new identity. Now, someone reminds him of his past and he gets in touch with Charlie Parker, a private investigator, to settle this issue. Randall does not want to call the police and there is a simple reason: he lives a few miles away from Anna Kore’s house and has no alibi for the day she went missing.
Parker, reluctantly, accepts the case. He senses that Randall is not telling the truth. And, although not unusual, he soon finds that the FBI is assisting the state police in the missing girl’s case. But, why have they sent an organized crime expert? And Parker calls his old friends, Louis and Angel to assist him.
The Burning Soul is narrated from different perspectives, but only Charlie Parker uses the first-person narrative, the rest of the book is told by a third-person omniscient narrator. It can be read as a standalone book despite being the tenth in a series. As a matter of fact I have only read two so far, The Killing Kind (2001) and The Unquiet (2007). The graphic violence on previous instalments has declined significantly in this one. The supernatural elements are also less obvious and are mainly used to better understand the ghosts and fears, whether real or imagined, of some of the characters. In my opinion they fit the narrative properly.
Masterfully Connolly draws well-developed characters with just a few strokes. The story is pretty well-crafted and the different plot-lines intertwine accurately to keep the reader’s attention until the last page with some turns and twists at the end. It is also a dark tale but with some doses of humour. And, above all, it is superbly written. I’ve greatly enjoyed reading The Burning Soul and I highly recommend it. My rating, a five out of five.

El personaje principal es un ex detective de la policía de Nueva York transformado en investigador privado tras de la muerte violenta de su mujer y de su hija. En ocasiones sus fantasmas, ya sean reales o imaginarios, le persiguen. La acción, como en la mayoría de los libros de esta serie, se desarrolla en el estado de Maine (EE.UU.). El libro comienza cuando Anna Kore, una niña de catorce años de edad de Pastor’s Bay, Maine, ha desaparecido.
Un hombre que dice llamarse Randall Haight ha recibido algunas amenazas anónimas. Este no siempre ha sido su nombre. De niño mató a una niña de catorce años de edad y, tras cumplir su condena, recibió una nueva identidad. Ahora, alguien le recuerda su pasado y se pone en contacto con Charlie Parker, un investigador privado, para resolver esta cuestión. Randall no quiere llamar a la policía y tiene una razón muy simple: el vive a pocos kilómetros de la casa de Anna Kore y no tiene coartada el día que ella desapareció.

The Burning Soul está narrado desde diferentes perspectivas, pero sólo Charlie Parker utiliza la primera persona, el resto del libro está relatado en tercera persona por un narrador omnisciente. Se puede leer como un libro independiente, a pesar de ser el décimo de una serie. De hecho, sólo he leído dos hasta el momento, Perfil Asesino (2001) y Los atormentados (2007). La violencia gráfica de las anteriores entregas ha disminuido significativamente en este caso. Los elementos sobrenaturales, también son menos evidentes y se utilizan principalmente para entender mejor los fantasmas y temores, reales o imaginarios, de algunos de los personajes. En mi opinión se ajustan a la narrativa correctamente.
Connolly dibuja magistralmente personajes bien desarrollados con sólo unos pocos trazos. La historia está muy bien elaborada y las diferentes tramas se entrelazan con precisión con objeto de mantener la atención del lector hasta la última página con algunos giros imprevistos al final. También es un cuento oscuro, pero con algunas dosis de humor. Y, sobre todo está muy bien escrito. He disfrutado mucho la lectura de The Burning Soul y lo recomiendo encarecidamente. Mi calificación, un cinco de cinco.
