The Alphabet in Crime Fiction Community Meme hosted by Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise arrives this week to letter "G". My G goes to Giménez Bartlett, Alicia.

Alicia Gimenez Bartlett was born in Almansa, Spain, in 1951 and has lived in Barcelona since 1975. After the enormous success of her first novels, she decided to leave her work as a teacher of Spanish literature, to dedicate herself full-time to writing. In 1997, she was awarded the Femenino Lumen prize for the best female writer in Spain. She subsequently launched her Petra Delicado series, quickly making her into one of Spain’s most popular and loved crime writers. (Taken from Europa editions).

Her last novel Donde Nadie Te Encuentre (Where Nobody Finds You) won the Nadal Prize 2011, Spain’s oldest literature award. The novel tells the story of Teresa Pla Meseguer (1917-2004), a female bandit who joined the resistance movement against Franco’s dictatorship (1939-75).

El Alfabeto del Crimen: G, por Giménez Bartlett, Alicia

El Alfabeto del Crimen  organizado por Kerrie en Mysteries in Paradise llega esta semana a la letra "G". La G de Giménez Bartlett, Alicia.

Alicia Giménez Bartlett nació en Almansa, España, en 1951 y ha vivido en Barcelona desde 1975. Después del enorme éxito de sus primeras novelas, decidió dejar su trabajo como profesora de literatura española, para dedicarse a escribir a tiempo completo. En 1997, fue galardonada con el Premio Femenino Lumen a la mejor escritora española. Posteriormente empezó a publicar su serie protagonizada por Petra Delicado, con la que consiguió una gran popularidad en toda España.

Su última novela Donde nadie te encuentre ha sido galardonada con el Premio Nadal de 2011, el más antiguo de los premios literarios españoles. La novela cuenta la historia de Teresa Pla Meseguer (1917-2004) una mujer bandido que se unió a la resistencia contra la dictadura de Franco (1939-1975).

Pa Negre de Agustí Villaronga

Begoña y yo fuimos a ver ayer Pa Negre, una película que ganó la semana pasada la mayor parte de los Premios Goya, 9 de 14 nominaciones. Después de una impresionante secuencia de apertura no me ha gustado demasiado su desarrollo. Me he encontrado con una historia muy confusa y demasiado compleja. No he leído el libro en el que se basa pero me ha parecido de muy difícil adaptación. El resultado final no me ha convencido. Nos podríamos haber ahorrado algunas escenas y algunos personajes, mientras que otros personajes no están suficientemente desarrollados. De hecho, es un drama muy triste, demasiado deprimente para mi gusto. La película es aterradora. Los personajes son demasiado lineales, pero se salvan gracias a la excelente interpretación de la mayoría de los actores. Además de una excelente secuencia de apertura y de una magnífica interpretación se puede destacar también la fotografía, la atmósfera creada y el vestuario.

Mi clasificación: 6/10.

Pa Negre (Black Bread) by Agustí Villaronga

Begoña and I went to see yesterday Pa Negre (Dark Bread), a film that won last week most of the Goya Awards, 9 out of 14 nominations. After an impressive opening I did not like the further development of the film. I found it confusing and complex. I have not read the book on which the story is based, but I found it very difficult to adapt and the end result has not convinced me. Some scenes and some characters could have been avoided, while other characters were not developed properly. In fact it is a very sad drama, too depressing for my taste. The film is terrifying. I found the characters too linear, but they can be saved due to the excellent performance of most actors. Besides the impressive opening and the actor’s excellent performance, the photography, the atmosphere created and the costumes can be highlighted.

Synopsis: In the harsh years of post-war rural Catalonia, Andreu, a youngster relegated to the losers’ side, comes across the bodies of a man and his son in the woods. When the authorities want to pin the blame on his father, the boy decides to try and help him, setting out to find out who killed them. The experience teaches Andreu moral awareness in a world of adults nourished by lies. To survive, he betrays his own roots, eventually finding the monster deep inside himself.

Poe’s tales of mystery and imagination laid the groundwork for a new genre in the history of literature, the detective story. In The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841), the first of the three tales starring the fictitious C. Auguste Dupin, we find the prototype for many fictional detectives, including Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. The story is told in first person by an unnamed narrator and it is also considered the first locked-room mystery.

After a philosophical introduction about the mental features discoursed of as the analytical, the reader is introduced to C. Auguste Dupin by an unnamed narrator:

“This young gentleman was of an excellent – indeed of an illustrious family, but, by a variety of untoward events, had been reduced to such poverty that the energy of his character succumbed beneath it, and he ceased to bestir himself in the world, or to care for the retrieval of his fortunes. By courtesy of his creditors, there still remained in his possession a small remnant of his patrimony; and, upon de income arising from this, he managed, by means of a rigorous economy, to procure the necessaries of life, without troubling himself about its superfluities. Books, indeed, where his sole luxuries, and in Paris these are easily obtained.”

The story then revolves around the double murder of Madame L’Espanaye and her daughter in the Rue Morgue and how C. August Dupin finds an explanation and solves the mystery surrounding the case.

Given its historical significance, its length and its easy accessibility by means of  the Internet, this is a must read for every genre aficionado. If you have not read it yet, you won’t be disappointed. I’m sure you will enjoy the prose of one of the world’s best storytellers.

Los Crímenes de la Calle Morgue por Edgar Allan Poe

Poe sentó las bases de un nuevo género en la historia de la literatura, la historia de detectives en Cuentos de misterio y de imaginación. En Los Crímenes de la Calle Morgue (1841), el primero de los tres cuentos protagonizada por C. Auguste Dupin, nos encontramos con el prototipo de muchos detectives de ficción, como Sherlock Holmes y Hércules Poirot. La historia está contada en primera persona por un narrador sin nombre y también está considerado como el primer misterio de cuarto cerrado.

Después de una introducción filosófica acerca de las características de la inteligencia que suelen calificarse de analíticas, C. Auguste Dupin es presentado al lector por un narrador sin nombre:

“Este joven caballero procedía de una excelente  – de hecho de una ilustre familia, pero una serie de desdichadas circunstancias lo habían reducido a tal pobreza que la energía de su carácter sucumbió ante la desgracia, llevándolo a alejarse del mundo y a no preocuparse por recuperar su fortuna. Gracias a la cortesía de sus acreedores le quedó una pequeña parte del patrimonio, y la renta que le producía bastaba, mediante una rigurosa economía, para subvenir a sus necesidades, sin preocuparse de lo superfluo. Los libros constituían su único lujo, y en París éstos son fáciles de obtener.”

La historia gira alrededor del doble asesinato de la señora L’Espanaye y de su hija en la calle Morgue y cómo C. Auguste Dupin encuentra la explicación y resuelve el misterio que rodea al caso.

Por su importancia histórica, su extensión y su fácil accesibilidad a través de Internet, esta es una lectura obligada para todos los aficionado al género. Si no lo han leído, no se sentirán decepcionados. Estoy seguro de que podrán disfrutar de la prosa de uno de los mejores narradores del mundo.

Testigo Involuntario de Gianrico Carofiglio

En Bari, el abogado Guido Guerrieri lleva una vida monótona y mediocre. Su mujer acaba de abandonarlo, su carrera se encuentra estancada. Un día acepta un caso aparentemente desesperado, la defensa de Abdou Thiam, un vendedor ambulante senegalés, acusados del secuestro y asesinato de un niño de nueve años de edad. Su cuerpo ha sido encontrado en el fondo de un pozo cerca de una playa popular. Un proceso abreviado ahorrará  tiempo y dinero al Estado, pero el resultado implicará una condena cierta. A cambio el acusado puede obtener una sentencia más corta y evitar la cadena perpetua. Alternativamente un proceso ordinario, largo y costoso, tiene pocas probabilidades de éxito y sin duda le condenarán a cadena perpetua.

Testigo involuntario, la primera novela de Gianrico Carofiglio, está narrada en primera persona por Guido Guerrieri, un personaje atractivo y muy humano. Aunque la trama está muy bien elaborada la historia está dirigida por los personajes. El libro nos ofreces aspectos interesantes sobre el sistema judicial italiano, un retrato perfecto del ambiente en el que se desarrolla y tiene un fuerte sentido del lugar. Me ha gustado  y he disfrutado con su lectura. Merece la pena. Muy recomendable.

Gianrico Carofiglio (Bari, 1961), ha sido durante años fiscal antimafia en Bari, la capital de la región de Puglia, en la costa del Mar Adriático en el sur de Italia. En el período 2007-2008 fue asesor del Comité de lucha contra la mafia en el Parlamento italiano en Roma y en 2008 fue elegido senador por el Partido Demócrata. A su primera novela Testigo involuntario (Testimone inconsapevole, 2002) le siguieron Con los ojos cerrados (Ad occhi Chiusi, 2003) y Dudas razonables (Ragionevoli Dubbi, 2007) protagonizadas también por Guido Guerrieri. Una novela independiente, El pasado es un país extranjero (Il passato è una terra straniera), se publicó en 2004. En enero de 2010 Sellerio publicó la cuarta novela de la serie Guido Guerrieri, Las perfecciones provisionales (Le provvisorie perfezioni) recientemente publicada en España por La esfera de los libros.

Involuntary Witness by Gianrico Carofiglio

In Bari, lawyer Guido Guerrieri carries a monotonous and mediocre life. His wife has just left him, his career is stalled. One day he accepts a seemingly hopeless case, the defence of Abdou Thiam, a Senegalese peddler, accused of kidnapping and murder a nine-year-old boy. His body was found at the bottom of a well near a popular beach. A shortened process will save time and money to the state but the result will be a certain conviction. In return the defendant can get a shorter sentence and avoid life imprisonment. Alternatively a long and costly regular process has few probabilities of success and will certainly sentenced him to life.

Involuntary Witness, Gianrico Carofiglio’s debut novel, is a first person narrative by Guido Guerrieri, an attractive and very human character. Although the plot is very well drawn the story is character driven. The book provides some interesting insights on the Italian legal system, a perfect portrait of the environment and it has a strong sense of place. I liked it very much and I have enjoyed this reading. It was worthwhile. Highly recommended.

Gianrico Carofiglio (Bari 1961), has been for years an anti-Mafia prosecutor in Bari, main town of the southern region of Puglia, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. In 2007-2008 he was advisor of the anti-Mafia Committee in the Italian Parliament in Rome and in 2008 he has been elected Senator with the Democratic Party. His first novel Testimone inconsapevole (Involuntary Witness), 2002, was followed by Ad occhi chiusi (A Walk in the Dark), 2003 and Ragionevoli Dubbi, 2007 (Reasonable Doubts) also featuring Guido Guerrieri. A standalone novel, Il passato è una terra straniera (The Past is a Foreign Country), was published in 2004. In January 2010 Sellerio launched the fourth novel with the Guido Guerrieri character, Le perfezioni provvisorie (Temporary Perfections).

Besides the reading challenges listed in my sidebar a number of challenges sounds very appealing to me:

My problem is that I’ve already signed for quite a number of challenges and I presume I won’t be able to make it. However, before my GP have a serious look at it, I’ll participate in these challenges, although I won’t make it official, at least yet.

For the Italian challenge I’m currently reading Involuntary Witness by Gianrico Carofiglio and I have in my TBR pile: Marco Vichi – Death in Florence, at least five Montalbanos by Andrea Camilleri, and a couple of Lucarellis. For a total of nine books set in Italy.

For the British Challenge I have: Mark Billingham – Bloodline, Ann Cleeves – White Nights, Val McDermid – A Place of Execution, Phillip Kerr – If the Dead Rise Not, three Rankins, and I have read so far this year Belinda Bauer – Darkside. For a total of eight.

Besides I’m planning to buy at least: RJ Ellory – A Quiet Believe in Angels, Elly Griffiths – The Crossing Places, Craig Russell – Lennox and a Martin Edwards’ Lake District, at least as soon as I lift my ban on new acquisitions.
