Francis Ford Coppola has been awarded the Princess of Asturias Prize for Arts this year. The president of the jury, Jose Llado y Fernandez-Urrutia called the director, “an exceptional storyteller who figures prominently in the history of the cinema. His career has been a continuous struggle to maintain total entrepreneurial and creative independence and in all facets he has evolved as a director, producer and screenwriter”. A Crime is Afoot 
Coppola is one of the true greats – he’s only made one film that I disliked (the very sentimental JACK) but all are ambitious and fascinating – certainly that run int he 1970s of GODFATHER parts 1 and 2, THE CONVERSATION and APOCALYPSE NOW is unlikely to ever be matched for breadth, ambition and artistic success.
