The Drowned Men’s Inn (original title: L’Auberge aux noyés) is a short story by Georges Simenon, published in 1938. It is part of Maigret series. This story was written in Neuilly during the winter of 1937-1938 or in Porquerolles in March 1938. A first version was published in the weekly Police-Film / Police-Roman, No. 29 of November 11, 1938. The final version was included in the collection Les Nouvelles Enquêtes de Maigret published by Gallimard in 1944. The first English edition, entitled The Inn of the Drowned was translated by Mary Scudamore in 1965 and was published also as The Inn of the Drowned in 1975 in the US. This translation entitled The Drowned Men’s Inn by Jean Stewart, 1977, is included in Maigret’s Pipe: Seventeen Stories (A Harvest Book) Mariner Books; Reissue 1994. Format: paperback. 336 pages. Synopsis: For a trivial matter, Maigret travels to Nemours (Seine-et-Marne, France). Once there, a mysterious thing happens. On the road that links Nemours to Montargis, not far from a restaurant called L’Auberge aux Noyes, on a rainy night, a truck hits a car and pulls it into the river Loing. When drawing the car out of the river, there’s no trace whatsoever of any possible ocupant of the vehicle involved. However, when opening the boot of the car, a macabre discovery springs up: A dead woman, her throat severed, is locked up there.
My take: Another entertaining short story, really well crafted, to add to the saga. Murielle Wenger rightfully points out: 1) We can especially note that the author shows us a particularly typical day of his hero, with the characteristic descriptions. 2) We find the particular “methods” of the Chief Inspector, like a phone call to get a weather report, which will help him with the reconstruction of the accident. 3) And lastly, we can follow, throughout the story, the phases of the investigation and the impact they have on Maigret’s bearing …

About the Author: Georges Joseph Christian Simenon was a prominent twentieth century Belgian-born French language author. He wrote prolifically and produced nearly 200 novels and other works of fiction. The fictional French detective Jules Maigret is one of his best known creations.

Este relato fue escrito en Neuilly durante el invierno de 1937-1938 o en Porquerolles en marzo de 1938. Sinopsis: Por un asunto trivial, Maigret viaja a Nemours (Seine-et-Marne, Francia). Una vez allí, sucede algo misterioso. En la carretera que une Nemours con Montargis, no lejos de un restaurante llamado L’Auberge aux Noyes, en una noche lluviosa, un camión choca contra un automóvil y lo tira al río Loing. Al sacar el automóvil del río, no hay rastro alguno de ningún posible ocupante del vehículo involucrado. Sin embargo, al abrir el maletero del auto, surge un descubrimiento macabro: una mujer muerta, con la garganta cortada, está encerrada allí.
Mi opinión: Otro relato breve breve entretenido, muy bien construido, para agregar a la saga. Murielle Wenger señala acertadamente: 1) Podemos destacar especialmente que el autor nos muestra un día particularmente típico de su héroe, con las descripciones características. 2) Encontramos los “métodos” particulares del Inspector Jefe, como una llamada telefónica para obtener un informe )eteorológico, que lo ayudará a reconstruir el accidente. 3) Y, por último, podemos seguir, a lo largo de la historia, las fases de la investigación y el impacto que tienen en el comportamiento de Maigret … (Mi traducción libre).

Sobre el autor: Georges Joseph Christian Simenon fue un prominente escitor del siglo XX en lengua francesa nacido en Bélgica. Escritor prolífico publicó mas de 200 novelas y otras obras de ficción. El detective de ficción francés Jules Maigret es una de sus creaciones más conocidas.
