Gunnar Staalesen

One of the fathers of Nordic Noir, Gunnar Staalesen was born in Bergen, Norway in 1947.  He made his debut at the age of 22 with Seasons of Innocence and in 1977 he published the first book in the Varg Veum series.  He is the author of over 20 titles (?), which have been published in 24 countries and sold over four million copies. Twelve film adaptations of his Varg Veum crime novels have appeared since 2007, starring the popular Norwegian actor Trond Espen Seim. Staalesen, who has won three Golden Pistols (including the Prize of Honour), lives in Bergen with his wife. The next instalments in the Varg Veum series – Where Roses Never Die and No One Is So Safe in Danger – will be published by Orenda Books in 2016 and 2017. (Source: Orenda Books)

Spanish film director Vicente Aranda died today at age 88. His 1965 film Fata Morgana is considered one of the most important movies of the Barcelona School of Film. The Barcelona School of Film was a 1960s group of Catalan filmmakers, concerned with the disruption of daily life by the unexpected, whose stylistic affinities lie with the pop art movement of the same years.

Carina Dymek is a rising star in the Swedish Foreign Ministry. A bright future as a diplomat is laid out for her. Andreas Norman (b. 1972) in Stockholm debuted as a poet in 1996. After studies in political science and history, he worked in Bosnia and later joined the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Into A Raging Blaze, published spring 2013, is his first novel.

Given Andreas Norman’s background there is no doubt he knows what he’s talking about. For several years he worked for the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs on security issues and Into a Raging Blaze is his debut novel. It’s also the first book in a planned trilogy. This is a political thriller although, occasionally, the story is lost in repetitions and in a huge quantity of details that, in my view, are unnecessary. Anyway, for my taste, the story is compelling and easy to read, though far from the complications of authors of the stature of Graham Greene and John le Carré. The story also provides some food for thought on issues such as the boundaries between the security and the privacy of individuals in modern day societies. Unfortunately, the characters are too stereotyped.

Andreas Norman’s Into a Raging Blaze has been shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association International Dagger. Into a Raging Blaze is translated by Ian Giles. The shortlists were announced at Crimefest in Bristol on Friday 15 May 2015. The overall winners will be presented with their awards on 30th June, to mark the end of Crime Reading Month, at a gala dinner in central London.

Andreas Norman (nacido en 1972) en Estocolmo debutó como poeta en 1996. Después de estudiar ciencias políticas e historia, trabajó en Bosnia y más tarde trabajó para el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Suecia. En un horno de fuego ardiente, publicada la primavera del 2013, es su primera novela.

Teniendo en cuenta los antecedentes de Andreas Norman no hay duda de que sabe sobre lo que está hablando. Durante varios años trabajó para el Ministerio sueco de Asuntos Exteriores sobre cuestiones de seguridad y En un horno de fuego ardiente es su primera novela. Es también el primer libro de una futura trilogía. Se trata de un thriller político, aunque, en ocasiones, la historia se pierde en repeticiones y en una enorme cantidad de detalles que, en mi opinión, resultan innecesarios. De todos modos, para mi gusto, la historia es atractiva y fácil de leer, aunque lejos de las complicaciones de autores de la talla de Graham Greene y John Le Carré. La historia también ofrece algunos elementos de reflexión sobre cuestiones tales como los límites entre la seguridad y la privacidad de los individuos en las sociedades de hoy en día. Por degracia, los personajes resultan muy estereotipados.

Mi valoración: B (Me gustó mucho)

En un horno de fuego ardiente ha sido traducida por Ian Giles. Los finalistas fueron anunciados en Bristol el viernes 15 de mayo de 2015 durante la Crimefest. Los premios a los ganadores serán entregados el 30 de junio, para conmemorar el final del mes dedicado a la lectura de novelas policíacas, en una cena de gala en el centro de Londres.

The Asphalt Jungle is the first book in W. R. Burnett’s urban trilogy, together with Little Men, Big World (1951) and Vanity Row (1952). The story is perhaps better known for its adaptation to the big screen in 1950 directed by John Huston and starring Sterling Hayden, Jean Hagen, Sam Jaffe, Louis Calhern, James Whitmore, and, in a minor but key role, Marilyn Monroe.

By the way, The Asphalt Jungle, one of the first motion pictures to realistically show the criminal world from the criminal’s viewpoint, is widely regarded by film critics as one of John Huston’s best. (Source: The American Film Institute).

The Asphalt Jungle is a gripping tale of the planning and execution of a jewellery store heist in a dark and corrupt Midwestern metropolis. William Riley Burnett (1899-1981) was a master of fiction, a skilful writer, contemporary to James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Dashiell Hammett. Burnett authored some 36 novels and either wrote alone or in collaboration 60 screenplays. His novels Little Caesar, High Sierra, The Asphalt Jungle represent a rich vein of thought in contemporary American literature and culture. After he began his career as a writer, Burnett moved to Chicago in the late 1920s at the height of Al Capone’s power and sway over the city. It was this atmosphere, Chicago in the ’20s and notably the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (Burnett was one of the first people on the scene) that inspired Burnett’s first great success Little Caesar, which was made into a film by the same name starring Edward G. Robinson. After this initial success, Burnett had a strong, close working relationship with Hollywood as both a novelist and screenwriter, and eventually found a champion in writer/director John Huston. Burnett collaborated with Huston on the adaptation of High Sierra in 1941 in which Humphrey Bogart redefined himself in the role of Roy Earle. The two men’s paths crossed again when Huston filmed The Asphalt Jungle in 1950. I particularly believe that The Asphalt Jungle is worth its reading, even if you don’t like heists’ novels. The story offers us a superb portrait of characters. Most, if not all of them, are losers that face their fate with the fatalism of a classic hero. In essence, this is a story that is very far away from the American dream, where we can find a great dose of realism in pure state. I acknowledge that some reviewers consider the story is outdated however, in my view, it reflects accurately the times in which was written.

Particularmente creo que merece la pena leer La jungla de asfalto, incluso si no le gustan las novelas de atracos. La historia nos ofrece un magnífico retrato de personajes. La mayoría, si no todos ellos, son perdedores que se enfrentan a su destino con el fatalismo de un héroe clásico. En esencia, se trata de una historia que está muy lejos del sueño americano, donde podemos encontrar una gran dosis de realismo en estado puro. Reconozco que algunos críticos consideran que la historia está anticuada sin embargo, en mi opinión, refleja con precisión la época en que fue escrita.

Mi valoración: A (Me encantó)
