El perro de terracota, publicada originalmente en 1996, es la segunda novela de la serie protagonizada por el comisario Montalbano y tiene varias tramas consecutivas. El lector tendrá la oportunidad de conocer mejor el particular mundo de Montalbano y su relación con el resto de los personajes de esta serie.

El libro comienza cuando Montalbano acude a una cita secreta con Tano El Griego, un conocido jefe mafioso. Tano considera que su tiempo se ha acabado y es mejor apartarse antes de morir en una cuneta. Pero no desea entregarse, quiere que lo detengan para salvar las cara.

Poco después tiene lugar un extraño robo en un supermercado. La mercancía robada acaba apareciendo en un camión abandonado aparcado junto a una estación de servicio. El propietario del supermercado considera que ha sido objeto de una broma, pero esta explicación no convence a Montalbano. Más tarde un testigo del robo sufre un accidente y muere.

A continuación Tano El Griego sufre una emboscada cuando era trasladado a un lugar más seguro. Dos policías mueren y Tano, gravemente herido, consigue hablar con Montalbano poco antes de morir. Esto le llevará a descubrir un arsenal en una cueva oculta.

Durante una inspección posterior, Montalbano y sus hombres encuentran un pasadizo secreto que conduce a otra cueva. En ella descubren, cuidadosamente dispuestos, los cuerpos momificados de dos jóvenes amantes, un cuenco con monedas, una vasija de barro y un gran perro de terracota.

Después de un tiroteo Montalbano dedica todas sus energías a resolver el enigma oculto tras este extraordinario descubimiento, mientras se recupera de sus heridas.

He disfrutado mucho con esta sorprendente e interesante lectura. En ocasiones es muy divertida y, sobre todo, es esencial para conocer mejor el resto de la serie. He comenzado a leer toda la serie por orden cronológico, después de haber leído varios de sus libros y, en este, he encontrado a Camilleri en uno de sus mejores momentos. No se lo pierda.

The Terracotta Dog by Andrea Camilleri

The Terracotta Dog, originally published in 1996, is the second novel in Inspector Montalbano series and it has several consecutive plots. The reader will have the opportunity to find out more about the particular world of Montalbano and his relationship with the rest of characters in the series.

The book opens with Montalbano going to a secret encounter with “Tano Il Greco“, a notorious mafia boss. Tano is aware that his time has passed and he wants to withdraw before dying in the gutter. He does not want to surrender, but to be arrested in order to save face.

Short after there is a strange robbery at a supermarket. The stolen goods are found in an abandoned truck parked near a filling station. The supermarket’s owner believes this is a joke, but his explanation does not convince Montalbano. Later on a witness to the robbery has a car accident and dies.

Then “Tano Il Greco” suffers an ambush while being transferred to a safer place. Two police are killed and Tano, severely wounded, manage to talk to Montalbano shortly before dying. This will lead him to find an arsenal in a hidden cave.

During a further inspection, Montalbano and his men find a hidden passage leading to another cave where they discover, carefully arranged, the mummified bodies of two young lovers, a bowl with coins, a clay pot and a large terracotta dog.

After a gunfire Montalbano devotes all his energies to solve the mystery behind this extraordinary discovery, while recovering from his wounds.

I’ve enjoyed reading this amazing and interesting novel. Sometimes it’s very amusing and, above all, it’s essential for a better understanding of the rest of the books in the series. I’ve just started to read them all in chronological order, having read some of them before, but this one is Camilleri at his very best. Don’t miss it.
