This large-scale crime novel takes off from a well-established historical fact: the occupation of the West-German embassy by terrorists in 1975. The story moves rapidly to 1989 and the unsolved stabbing of a civil servant, and then to 1999, when Swedish intelligence investigates the newly instated Minister of Justice, finding unexpected links with crimes in the past. Another Time, Another Life is a complex novel and difficult to classify. At times it’s a police procedural, a spy novel and a psychological thriller, with some doses of dark humour interspersed. A rewarding read and one of the best crime fiction books I’ve read this year.

Leif GW Persson is the Grand Master of Scandinavian crime fiction. Over three decade, he has taken a scalpel to the political and social mores of Swedish society in his dark and complex crime novels. Persson is also Scandinavian’s most renowned criminologist and leading psychological profiler, and has served as an advisor to the Swedish Ministry of Justice. Since 1991, he has been Professor at the National Swedish Police Board, and is regularly consulted by the media as the country’s foremost expert on crime. He is the author of nine novels. Another Time, Another Life, the second part of his trilogy The Fall of the Welfare State, won the Swedish Crime Novel of the Year Award in 2003 granted by the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers.

Esta novela negra de gran extensión parte de un hecho histórico bien conocido: la ocupación de la embajada de Alemania Occidental por terroristas en 1975. La historia pasa rápidamente al apuñalamiento sin resolver de un funcionario público en 1989, y después a 1999, cuando la inteligencia sueca investiga al recién nombrado ministro de Justicia, encontrando vínculos inesperados con crímenes del pasado.
“Aunque después también tenemos lo de la fantasía –pensó Johansson–, y es cuando toma el papel principal cuando una buena historia realmente realza a las personas y éstas cobran vida en ella. Lo que era verdad y lo que era mentira en realidad es una diferencia bastante sobrevalorada, y ¿no es así que las grandes verdades, las verdades eternas, sólo pueden tener vida y contenido con ayuda de la fantasía de las personas?” (página 473).
Otro tiempo, otra vida es una novela compleja y difícil de clasificar. En ocasiones se trata de un procedimiento policial, de una novela de espías y de un thriller psicológico, con algunas dosis de humor intercaladas. Una lectura gratificante y uno de los mejores libros de novela negra que he leído este año.

Leif GW Persson es el gran maestro de la novela negra escandinava. Durante tres décadas, ha diseccionado los usos políticos y sociales de la sociedad sueca en sus oscuras y complejas novelas negras. Persson es también el criminólogo escandinavo más reputado y un importante generador de perfiles psicológicos, y ha sido asesor del Ministerio de Justicia sueco. Desde 1991, es profesor de la Junta Nacional de la Policía sueca, y es periodicamente consultado por los medios de comunicación como el principal criminólogo del país. Es autor de nueve novelas.
